As I'm driving the other day along a stretch of freshly mowed shoulder I was reminded of how much trash is being thrown out car windows.
I think they mowed more trash than grass. Absolutely disgusting. Then seconds later,......out of the car window in front of me comes a used diaper right onto the road. :X

but of course, isn't that what you are supposed to do with your trash.
makes me sick too. it is really bad right by the airport where visitors pass, first thing to greet them.

It's really bad here. Just the entire mind set towards garbage. You can't go 2 minutes without seeing somebody with water bottle.

1. Add a beverage container tax at the supply level.
2. Pay pickers by the pound for glass/plastic bottles.
3. Half the litter problem solved and a small industry created.

I think #1 already exists, and the tax goes to recycling or litter programs or something.
#2 would be easy to cheat. Just raid a garbage bin and claim you picked it all up roadside.
A deposit law would work better.

The folks who mow the roadsides used to clean up that stuff but lately they've been leaving it behind.

A deposit law might work, but like the gas and gross receipts tax vs collecting at point of sale or pump, the govt realizes they have to collect it higher up the food chain or they'll never see it. And cheating is encouraged....call it "recycling". Where there's a will, there's a way.

there was a program for glass bottle collection years ago. Paid by the pound. It did an amazing job of cleaning up the glass by the side of the road. There was a crusher out by LaReine, and one had to bring the glass there. then the gov't grant or whatever ran out, no more money, plus they found they could not use the crushed glass in the asphalt or anywhere, as it was too coarse I believe. End of that program when no more money.
