Living on a boat in St. Thomas

Was thinking as an alternate plan, of taking my 48 Sportfisher down and living on the boat for the 1st year or so till I can establish a living or buisness idea. Is this common in USVI, people who do this? if so, how expensive are the marinas slips, (comparatively) & what ammenities do they include? any specific marina names would be appreciated for my research.

Thanks

Compass Point Marina (water, elec)
Crown Bay Marina (full service marina, cable, water, elec, phone)
Yacht Haven Grande (under construction, world class marina)
Sapphire Marina (no facilities, water, elec, phone)
American Yacht Harbor (waiting list is at least 2 years long, no faclilities, water, elec, phone)

For a 48 footer expect to pay about $2000 a month for a slip + water, elec, phone.

Regards
JET

Most people would use a mooring ball and dinghy to save a couple grand. There are a few other marinas that might be less, however there will be a waiting list for these less than desirable marinas, as well..

Lots and lots of boaties and yachties on mooring balls, though...join the crowd!

On STT most or all of the marinas which allow liveaboards have waiting lists for slips. You may want to get your name on those lists as soon as possible even if you aren't planning on being here for a while.

Matty,

Having lived aboard in STT as well as ST. Martin, you will invariably spend a great deal of time dealing with your boat on a daily basis. Mooring balls are almost as scarce as dock space and there are plenty of regulations regarding anchoring for periods greater than a few days. Most of the marinas are on the east end and landing a dinghy in the main harbor can become an ordeal. Do you live aboard already? If so, your learning curve will be less pronounced. If you do not, you might want to try it out up there before you come down here.

I would think that you really need an slip for power, etc. Most live-aboards here are low tech sailboats. As everyone has said, there is a dearth of dock space. It probably will change when the new Yacht Haven complex and marina opens.

Thanks for the info! WOW $2000 per month???, thats more than what rent would be if we got an apartment there, figured this plan would be MORE affordable.

Yes we live aboard during summers.....

Moorage slips on STX are around $15 per foot per month, including power and water at some marinas. Waiting lists apply for many sizes of vessels. It would not be $2K per month for a 48 footer, though.
