So after a ton of planning and research, I have been on STT for a week now and everything is going great. Being a bartender by trade, finding employment was a breeze, especially given the fact that the season is about to start up. If any of you are downtown on Mondays, Fridays, or Saturdays, stop by Bobby's Bar and Grill and say hello! Living in the Villa Fairview with Ronnie has been good. The residents here have developed quite a community and I have really enjoyed living with all of them. I'll be picking up my car tomorrow (Thanks Island Paul and Anna) and overall my life is going great.

Thank you everyone for being so helpful. I'm not sure which helped me more - the advice that I read (wasn't much of a poster) over the last 7 months or just thinking about STT everyday and keeping my priorities straight.

That being said, I am looking for something a little more permanent than the Villa Fairview. Since I'm established in Charlotte Amalie now, I'd like to continue living here but am open to other places. Anyone know of anything available? Word of mouth on island is incredibly powerful - I've already heard of a few nice spots but I wanted to extend my search to the board as well. A 1 bedroom would be nice but finding a roommate for a 2 bedroom wouldn't be too hard. Thanks again for everyone's kind words. This would've been a much more difficult move without you.

~Tom~

P.S. Now that I'm learning more and more about being here, I'll probably start posting more myself. It'll feel good to give back.

My boyfriend and I are planning to move to STT in about a month, any advise? Are biggest questions and concerns have to do with moving the bigger stuff and if we should bring a car.

Can you offer us any pointers? Please...

Hello Tom,

Glad to read things are going well for you, and that the message board helped you during your moving plans. I look forward to you becoming a board regular and sharing your experiences and thoughts as you settle into island living.

All the best,

I can't really give any advice on moving bigger things, since I came down here with two suitcases and a carry-on. Early on I decided that it'd be easiest for me to do that than to try to ship things down to myself. Granted, I've never been much of a materialist so there wasn't a whole lot that I was upset about leaving behind.

As for bringing a car down, I'd suggest it, on the condition that it'd be a good car for the island. Having a car here is extremely useful but if you're going to worry about dings and scratches, you'd best sell it and buy a different car here. Roads are bad and narrow. There are many cars on island that are missing a mirror or two from close calls while parked on the street.

Many people on this board talk of the importance of a Pre-Move Visit. If you can afford it, great, but personally I came down here with the intention of not working for about 3-4 weeks. Granted, I ended up stumbling into a job (literally) about 5 days after my arrival, but I had enough saved up that I could have lived for quite awhile without an income.

The best advice I can give though is just be nice to everyone. If you're not extroverted, learn how to fake it for awhile. 😉 Word of mouth is INCREDIBLY powerful on the island. Everything from jobs to cars to apartments can all be found just by asking around. Give everyone you pass a greeting, not just a simple hello but "Good morning!" "Good evening!" or something along those lines. The locals really appreciate it.

If you have any questions, just ask, I'd love to help more!

I want to move to st thomas, I have been a tow truck driver for 21 years, I would be interested in driving a tow truck on island, but I would also like to do something different. I would like to know if any of the resorts offer lodging for employees, if so which ones and what kind of jobs do they offer for live in staff?
