tommystx, i think if people have an actual question people do try to answer it. if they come for " tell me what its like" , yes-it is easier for them to read a handful of posts that might interest them. and sometimes when i see no one has answered, i will say anything to push it to the top again in hopes that someone else will see it an answer it

Speee1dy, I understand that for sure. I understand that some people have done zero research before posting here but this is the start of their research. I think it's great that some people will do a search for a person with a question and link the relevant thread. It really is tough for some people to even know where to begin when it comes to wanting to make a life changing decision such as moving to a tropical island thousands of miles away from their home.

I really don't see any one really going after people like that but to see a lot of the regular posters going at it between one another can turn some people away before even asking whatever questions they have.

... I know people who have moved down here who stopped accessing this site because of the antagonism, cliquishness, and condescending tone of some people. Two of them named OT specifically when they said they go elsewhere for information! ...

... Perhaps some introspection is needed by everyone as to why they post here, and why they do it in the tone they do. (Writing tone being the Internet's body language).

I've been contributing to this site for 10 years with 7,000+ posts. It's perfectly normal that some will disagree with my opinions as there are apparently some who take umbrage at the way I express myself. "Writing tone" is highly subjective - as anybody with forum experience knows very well. There is no "body language" in internet-speak.

There have been and always will be people on forums whose opinions I disagree with and some who's delivery I find grating but I would never dream of turning on the vitriole and personally attacking them as a few obviously prefer to do. To me that denotes that the writer is simply incapable of expressing themselves civilly.

I can't comprehend entirely disassociating one's self from a forum because one mere mortal's opinions and delivery run counter to one's expectations as those expectations seem illogical. If someone truly is so thin-skinned to be so affected, that's pretty sad. If you don't agree with an opinion or it's delivery then move on and/or - as you point out - just ignore.

I've made many friends over many years through this and other forums and none of them has an issue disagreeing with me, nor I with them. If you want a chorus of kumbaya and a scoop of ice cream at the end of every post then participating in a forum may not be for you.

Now, about that DIY A/C unit ...

I realize my comments are contributing to the issues I'm complaining about. But this thread is FUBAR already, so . . . .

As writing was my line of post-graduation study, and much of my livelihood, past and present, I can assure you writing tones are categorized specifically. If I showed this post to educated writers, they would use the words "defensive", "sarcastic" and "haughty" or "supercilious" to describe the tone. I run a forum on one of my sites, and have lively comment sections on 2 others. From that experience, I agree that tone is received subjectively. That's why it's even more important for posters to think before clicking "post".

It's assumptive, and a little self-serving, to believe that people would avoid this site, because they are too thin skinned or don't agree with your opinions. I didn't mean to imply you were the sole reason, either. They avoid the site for the reasons I already indicated. The two who mentioned you are anything but thin-skinned. That they specifically mentioned you as an example should give you pause, rather than cause you to blow them off as inferior beings. Also, you have personally attacked often. You're just much more subtle about it. Not vitriol really, just veiled incivility toward specific persons, mostly through sarcastic comments.

As for tone on the Internet being equated to body language, it's a well-used metaphor.

@TommySTX - Yes, the same subject comes up too often. And the "would I say this in person?" approach is good advice.

yes, i am very much owed an apology by you . maybe the machete slashing brings it to the front of your mind?

If your aim is to irritate by waffling, well done. No clue to what you're referring but obviously something major has seriously stuck in the craw and it's so much healthier to cough it up.

Wow! I seriously can't believe the immaturity coming from this thread! How about rather that bitching and moaning about how you know of someone whose feelings were hurt about something someone supposedly said, that person either bring it directly to the source or to the forum moderator. And if you are the person on the receiving end of such horrid negativity either bring it to the person's attention in PM, or bring it to the attention of the forum moderator. Is it really that hard to act like mature adults?

I feel like I'm back to teaching a bunch of whining, crying kindergartners.

Get over it. Move on. No need to air all your dirty laundry and drama.

Because reporting certain "privileged" members is nothing but futile. Then even when the accused is shown past posts berating and antagonizing members and it's brought to the attention of the moderator nothing happens. To make matters worse some members stand behind the violator even though they are clearly wrong.
I hope this clears things up.

Well then Sausage, if you don't like it try again. And if it doesn't work, try again. That is what mature adults do. And if it really bothers you so much then you, and others, always have the option to either move along and find another forum to hang out on or you can choose to ignore any and all posts by anyone who offends you. But going on, and on, and ON makes you, and anyone else that I mentioned in my previous post, look like whiny, immature, little brats who need a good long lecture on how to act like a mature adult.

Cripes I taught kindergartners who behaved better than some of the posters on this forum.

LMAO! Wow. Are you serious?

If you ACTUALLY read my post I never blamed anyone. I just stated options available to you, and anyone else who feels they have a problem with any particular poster on how to handle the situation in a mature fashion. I than stated what certain people's behaviors looked like based on how they are choosing to behave. If you or anyone else choose to read into my post as anything more than that, well that is on your shoulders.

Dear klpmtm, both posts sound like what started it in the first place. What exactly gives you the right to speak out like that anyway? We're not kindergartners. So go LMAO elsewhere.

And the posts and hits make this site popular in rankings, so may not be removed. Boring, informative posts don't got viral.
