making the move to stt
It does take a special type of person to live here, and we have a love hate relationship with outsiders. It is kind of a time honored tradition to discourage continentals. The islands are a hot chick who has warts. We are well aware of all her flaws and yes they get on our nerves too, but god forbid anyone try to bad mouth her or try to change her in anyway. I think we fear becoming the states, even though I cant imagine it ever happening. Whether your time is long or short on the islands... welcome. You will be culturally challenged and you may even discover that this is where you belong, Far too many come from the states to start anew or to flee something old only to find that happiness doesnt just seep up from the ground here and whatever problems that had came with them.
Thanks David.. I understand that completely. No starting new here. No escaping anything. Just an exciting opportunity. As well as a chance to downsize and slow life down. We have a baby. We don't go out to eat now. We don't "party" now. This is a move for the right reasons I truly feel and I'm confident it will pay off in the near future and distant future. You can rest assured that my wife and I will leave the States behind us when we come and will treat your home with the same respect and reverence you do
I am sure you will do just fine. if you can, relax and enjoy the ride. any other questions just ask and be prepared for all types of answers.
As speee1dy says. You'll do fine. Your new fellow workers will help give you the lay of the land and best places to go, things to do and where to find things. Driving around this morning/North-side/Dorothea to Mahogany Run, I noticed there are lots of signs up on roadsides for places to rent. You can find places to rent in the Island Trader and they also list cars for sale. It's a free weekly advertising publication that comes out on STT every Thurs.
Just bring lots of sunscreen ( especially for little one) and mosquito repellent.
That stuff is expensive here!
Thanks all. Im sure I will do fine. Funny you mention sunscreen and deet. We were just talking about that last night and my wife told me she was going to ship that stuff to me weekly until she got there after I told her prices I saw when I was there.

Once you get settled in, those products are worth buying online from such as Amazon as the prices are considerably less expensive and you can get free shipping on combined items.
Think about mosquito netting especially for the little one.
Our mosquitoes seem to especially like fresh (newcomers) blood.
Spartacus - the mosquitoes in STT are the same as they are in the summer in michigan. They exist but you won't find it any different than you are dealing with right now. At one eyed Jacks in yacht haven grande Tony sells some great organic spray for no see ums which conventional bug spray doesn't repel as effectively as it does mosquitos.
The amazon thing is a good idea. We had already discussed ordering diapers from them
Please keep those of us still a couple years away informed as you take this exciting journey. Good Luck!
there is a thread somewhere of who ships here and cost of shipping. too bad walmart does not anymore
