Mango Poisoning...

Hello All,

Well, I went and did it again. I had a fruit smoothie with Mango in it. I now have a rash from the mangos. I had it before, but I thought maybe a smoothie would have been okay since I wasn't eating the actual fruit. I was wrong...

For those of you who do not know what I am talking about... Mangos have the same chemical or acid in their skin that is in poison ivy. If you are allergic to one than you are allergic to the other. I love mangos, but get a rash every time I eat them.

Anyway, I wanted to ask if anyone knew what to do with the rash. I have taken Benadryl to hopefully keep it in check. I am hoping I don't wake up with my face swollen (happened last time I ate a mango). My niece had the mango smoothie as well and has a bit of a rash. Any suggestions? Thanks all.

Teresa

I may be speaking out of my realm a little but I am a clinical person of sorts for a huge Emer Room and someone who is allergic to all kinds of fruits. As long as your symptoms don't get worse, as long as the rash doesn't appear to be infected (hot, pussie, oozing, etc) and as long as you can breathe okay with no tongue or throat swelling, the benedryl should be enough. I had a huge rash from fire coral once, all kinds of rashes from bug bites and eating melons and benadryl is the one product always prescribed by the MDs I've seen. The key is- are your symptoms stable and getting better or getting worse. In the latter case, you need to get to an Emerg Room as soon as possible and quit eatin' the mangos!

Lots of interesting variations on this allergic reaction. I'm fine if I'm eating cut mango that goes directly into my mouth. But if I peel one and eat it like a peach/apple, the area around my mouth swells up and itches for days.

Off topic. The staples came out today and I finally got to SHOWER. I'm sure my father was glad.

See you all next month.

Hello Teresa,

I don't have any tips but 🙁 poor you... mangos are soooo good. Sorry to rub it in.

Perhaps you should find another locally growing fruit to like. Try Soursop and soursop drinks or icecream. Glady's downtown has good soursop drinks. Or guava - thats another good one. I 2nd karrieb's note - stop eating the mangos... in any form. 🙂

I do wonder my husband has very bad allergies to poison ivy but seem not to have trouble with the mangoes I put in my chicken salad. Are the mangos on the VI Island any different from what we get here in the stores? I assume they are either from florida or california.

Hmmm... that's weird. I'd never heard that before. I'm highly allergic to poison ivy, but had no problem scarfing down mangos when I was there.

Linda J... glad to hear you're doin' good!

Thanks all,

It doesn't seem to be getting any worse, thank goodness. I have heard that if the mangos are handled correctly and peeled not cut, that you can eat the fruit without getting a rash, but I am too chicken to try. I have drank bottled fruit juices with mango with no problem, but I think if they are cooked or pasteurized that it doesn't affect you???

Guava is very good so I will just stick with that for now. I have a huge mango tree at my house, I guess I will give them away or just feed the iguanas (if they like them).
