Is a manual transmission ok for St. Thomas or is it a pain in the butt with the hills? Anyone have a preference over the other?

My current Honda Civic is the 1st car I have had automatic trans in - I vastly prefer stick for driving the hills - I have lived at the top of Crown Mt. for years so up and down mostly every trip - w/o a doubt it is a personal preference but if you like stick shifts I feel the gearing is way more appropriate to the hills. Buy a new clutch online ahead of time - it is cheaper to replace/fix than an auto-trans IMO.

Both cars automatic. Never a problem. Not all of STT requires a rock crawler type vehicle. If I can get around in a Kia Rio where I live so can you. I have even driven some of those more challenging north side hills. So where you live may be a factor. Like Exit stated it's preference.

In 30+ years of living here I've been driving an automatic for only the last 10 years and a manual transmission is a big saver overall when it comes to replacing brakes and, as ExitZero says, fixing bad transmissions.

Depends on how good you are at starting from stopped position in the middle of a hill? Can you heel toe tha brake and throttle? If not, go with an automatic.

I've always driven a stick shift.
When I have to drive an automatic, I have to consciously remember not to use my left leg and foot. Awkward.

You can down shift an auto to "save brakes" just like a manual. However you can do just as much damage to a manual trans using it to slow down on hills. In both cases brakes are way cheaper than a trans repair/replace.

I just sold my 2000 Honda that had a five speed manual. I loved driving it because of the stick.

Did you ever get to use that 4th and 5th gear on STX?

Sure you can use 4th and 5th on the four lane 66.

We almost have an "Interstate" on STX where high speeds are very achievable.

I'm lucky to hit 3rd gear in STT.
Can't remember last when I used 4th and never 5th.
