My boyfriend of 2 years is planning to move to St. Thomas end of june, and wants me to come live with him after I have saved up enough for a plane ticket. I have never been to the area (or even out of the United States), and neither has he. I just don't know what to expect. Is it easy to find a job? Is it a great place to live? Would it be a huge culture shock for me? Is KMART really the only major place to buy things? Are the storms really life threating, how long could one last, and how often do they come? I guess i'm just curious about all things concerning the Virgin Islands and St. Thomas. I'd apppreciate comments and facts from those that have made the move and what they experienced. Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Before I answer anything I'm going to tell you what everyone will tell you... go find out yourself. It's hard to explain but some will like it others will not, there is no way for anyone but yourself to figure that out and doing so first hand is about the only way to successfully do that. Now onto your questions....
I just returned from a 9 day pre move visit so while I am not yet an islander I will do my best until someone comes along and shows me up....

Jobs - Depending on what you are willing to do jobs are easy to find in the service / tourism industry in the peak season (winter months). Government is probably out of the question. Also I got the impression that a degree of somekind will get you places.

Great place to live? For me yea... for you, I have no idea.

Culture shock.... depends on you. For the most part everyone is friendly if you are friendly, that may shock you.

Kmart... no there are other places to buy things, but not many. Materialism doesn't run high on the priority list in the islands (for me any way).

Storms - can't say first hand but I spoke with some people who had lived through 2 hurricanes, one left them without power for 4 months, so they say.

Best bet is to read as many of these postings and informative web pages as you can and go visit. US Air has great rates right now. Good luck

You need a whole lot more than that, unless he is independantly wealthy and plans to take care of you! Lots of expenses here. Read Linda Js answer to Amanda.
