Medical question

We're coming this summer – earliest we can make it. This board – in fact the whole site – is terrific. But here's one question I haven't seen yet.

My mother in la wants to ome with us, and that's great. BUT – she has some medical issues. Right now virtually all her bills and prescriptions are paid for by the state of Oregon. What kind of medical program, if anything, is available for seniors?

The kids are excited, my wife is beyonf excited, and I'm ready to go. Last weekend we sold all my sweaters (maybe 20) at a garage sale. Next the winter coats are going! But we're not sure what to do about Mom's desite to come with.

Thanks.

Medicare works here. The rx plan I have is thru AARP.

Being disabled, I also am on medicare, AARP. All of the phamacies seem to accept that. There are also some wonderful doctors on island that can kind of 'case manage' with the medication and medical needs. His name is Braslow, located at the Rueckl building at the five corners.

Also, have you asked the State of Oregon if they will continue to cover for 'x' period of time? Sometimes they will offer (states, that is) a very low COBRA type of thing.

If you can send me more information, I can look deeper into this issue.

Warm regards,

Dan

But to answer your question in general terms, the USVI does not have any program similar to Oregon's. You would have to depend on the usual federal resources.

Thanks for your help. This is good news. Someone had told us Medicare wasn't available in the V.I. Glad to hear they didn't know what they were talking about. Janet's arthritis is the main problem, and that's just a matter of the prescriptions. She's got a heart condition that's going to carry her off one of these days, but she's come to grips with that and would rather get carried away from a warm, sunny place than one where we're almost always cold and wet.

And the pollen here is unbelievable. We live in the county where two thirds of the world's grass seed is grown, and when spring finally DOES bring warmer weather, my wife's allergies just about kill her. So the move isn't just a dream, it's a necessity.

When you say the state of Oregon pays, is that a MEDICAID program? Usually Medicaid is a cost sharing program between the feds and the state for low income individuals, regardless of age. We do have Medicare. We also have a form of Medicaid, but the income requirements are extremely low. One basically can have zero income.

We brought my mother with us. She is on Medicare and Medicade. Doctors here will accept Medicare but there is only a clinic for Medicade. However there are a few doctors that will just accept the Medicare and not worry about the Medicade. They won't tell you. Just make an appointment and discuss with the doctor personally. Hope this helps.

Actually, when I said the state of Oregon, I meant the state, not Medicare or Medicaid. The Oregon Health Plan is really pretty terrific. The drawback is, you have to live in Oregon. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice place. I've lived here half my life. Which means for half my life I've been cold and wet.
