A short commentary by journalist Linda Ellerbee about the relative safety of living in Mexico; much of what she says applies equally well if you substitute "USVI" for "Mexico":

Good article but one huge difference. She left her door unlocked and the 'beat' cop entered her home to make sure all was okay. I can't imagine that EVER happening here.

The "beat" cop part is unlikely here, because we don't have residential areas under foot patrol, but I know a lot of people who leave their doors/windows open here, even when they leave the house to run errands.

The "beat" cop part is really what I wish the VIPD would realize we need. Even if they don't get out of their vehicles its crazy that you rarely ever see a cop car in the neighborhoods patrolling. At least that's the case in Welcome where I live. Where are they all day?

I saw DD coffee at Food town too but Good Spirit's is less expensive! - one of the owners must be from Boston.

That will be worth the trip to have DD coffee! Are they opened in the morning? I have eaten their bar b q-It is really the best I have ever had! I think one of the owners is from Kansas- No wonder - it is so good! Someone said the pea salad is great as a side. I 've had the creamy spinach and potato salad. My husband who does not eat spinach even ate it! I recommend both!(tu)
I have not tried the Tex-Mex- but certainly will!

So very well-written. I too have lived in NYC, the USVI and Mexico. Yes, there were incidents including one gun fight between two police officers, however, that had not ever happened in the history of where I lived. Shit happens. We do tend to think we are the only Americans, and in grouping people and places, we tend to dishonor diversity and the complexity of any nation or territory.

Bravo, mi compadre! Keep the articles coming!
