The housing I see on craigslist looks expensive. Any suggestions?

What do you mean by "affordable"???? And, what amenities are you seeking???? Rental housing can run anywhere from around $800/mo for a simple barebones studio to $25,000/mo for an upscale villa.

For what it is worth I just saw a segment on HGTV's House Hunters International about a young woman looking to purchase a home on St. thomas with a "rental unit" so she could generate extra income. Two of the places she looked at had single bedroom rental units that were quite old and a bit run down that rented for $1,000/mo.

assuming you get the job offer, your best bet is to find temporary accommodations when you first arrive on island and then seek out apartments. DO NOT rent anything sight unseen lest you be very disappointed when you finally do see it.

Depends what you need. More info will allow those on island to help you better. Is it just you, or your family of 5? Pets? Will you have a car? Etc...

Right, $1500 max for what?
Our housing is expensive but, Insurance is VERY expensive here(I pay 5X what my friend in NJ pays).
Add Masonry construction(concrete is 2X what it is in NJ), the $65,000 built in swimming pool we call a cistern that stateside houses don't normally have etc.etc.
Renters share the completed construction space w/ the owner which costs are very high by most stateside standards.
$1400+ utilities could get you a 2X1. $1700 could include the utilities(but no air) & probally a propane stove9you replace the bottle).

There are cheaper places such as Savan which is sort of close to UVI, but a terrible area to live in.
