Ive been trying to get ahold of someone that I know that works at Kmart STT to see but no luck.....

As much as I dislike Walmart because of the way they treat their labor force. I wouldn't mind seeing them come in, especially if they were to do super stores....

I was at a few Walmarts on Puerto Rico a few weeks ago.

I could get to like them. Very nice.

Do our illustrious senators or governor have anything to say on this subject?

Anyone have a link to any other VI news source besides DN that we can read since not on island and don't subscribe?

I posted previously I was told by our chamber of commerce to expect one of the STX stores to close sooner than later but it wasn't known which one at the time.

I finally got a chance to talk to a friend that works for Kmart STT. ..... yes the stores are liquidating inventory but because they need to make room for store inventories that are closing.... There is also still a chance that local stores will close but not at this time........

I think the target population for a Walmart supercenter is 50,000, so both islands should be a good market for them. If they brought groceries with them, not sure what would happen. Most likely that would be stopped. GERS invested in the new grocery store by the airport.

How could the GVI or GERS stop a private enterprise from opening a store in the VI?

if walmart comes and if they have groceries at stateside prices or close, that wouldnt be terrible. but it would put a damper on other grocers especially in the beginning until the novelty wears off.

and if walmart comes, west would be best because there is plenty of room to expand

I hear ya, Wonder why UBER isnt here? It would be a good thing and the Government would get their share of taxes. Dont think they will ever put meters in those taxis do you?

Now that the VI has been fully mapped by Google, Uber will be here sooner or later.

Legally, they can't, but: permits, business license, fire inspection; all controlled by GVI. Not that anything like that would ever happen here!

So...if Kmart left, as they will eventually when they run out of inventory from other closed stores, why would the GVI want to forego all the revenue that having a Walmart(s) would generate?

It just doesn't make sense to me.

Not saying it would happen, just that it's possible. GERS owns Carambola, and as far as I know they haven't resisted new hotels/resorts; I doubt anyone in government would actively sabotage Walmart or whoever.

and Gimbels

I don't think Gimbels was ever here, at least on STT, but Woolworths was the big retailer here for a long time. lots of fun here pre-internet shopping!!

I dont think they would try to block Walmart,
However if Walmart tried to bring a supercenter with a full grocery store there could be political pressure to stop that part.

My info has it that K-Mart in Sunny Isle will be closing. K Mart West would be the only K-Mart.

So that means the stores in the VI are preparing to close I guess? Maybe the employees have been told not to answer questions about it. Either way I hate to see people lose jobs.

Had a few beers with a "Loss prevention specialist" for Kmart... he's just started a 6 month job here, he said no way are they closing, they are too profitable (not sure about sunny isle location).

This may be why they are liquidating merchandise through the VI stores.
It will be good for us while it lasts.

They are doing that to get ready for the mass influx from the states Kmart closures.... all that inventory has to go somewhere, and at least here people are buying it.

That is true, plus our prices are higher than in the states so a 40% off sale is good for us, plus they aren't giving it away.
