Mosquito Help

I know that there have been previous postings on this topic, but I'm desperate. They - the mosquitos - LOVE me! I have used every product I can find and believe that the mosquitos are actually attracted to the repellants - and me, of course. I can't even go to the bathroom without being eaten alive. Many of the products I've used to spray our place state that you must remove all pets for at least 15 minutes after treating the area...which I've done, as we have our dog with us. But, by the time we re-enter our home, the mosquitos have taken over again. Seriously, I think the mosquitoes are having a party at our house - and they've invited their friends, brothers, sisters, relatives, cousins, etc.

So, before I go completely crazy, does anyone have any tried and true solutions? Because we have our dog, we want to make sure that we don't kill her with spraying products all over. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I just have a couple of things that come to mind though you've likely alread jumped on these:
Keep grass, bushes, trees cut back as much as possible.
Eliminate pooling of water near the house and definitely eliminate any containers where water collects.
Plant citronella plants and/or neem trees on your property

Those coils you put on a saucer & light work. You put them in your bedroom or bathroom early, close the doors & let them smolder for a while. Just don't put them where kids can step on them, etc. You'll probably become less tasty to them after a while.

I just bought is lemon eucalyptus stuff by repel. It says it works for 6 hours. Not true for us but I have been using it on JJ instead of the deet and it has worked pretty well. I just have to reapply every couple of hours.

Hubby is up and is furiously spraying himself and waving his hands around. I am trying not to laugh at him.

Oddly, I don't have any mosquitoes buzzing around. I guess they haven't found the hole the rat chewed in the deck screen a few years ago - yet.

Avon Skin so soft works for about ten minutes, Bounce Fabric Softener sheets works for about 10 minutes. Unfortunately the only thing that really works is any product with "Deet".

Maybe we should just roll around in the mud. That's what the animals do to keep the bugs off. Or maybe we can some insect eating birds to hang out on our shoulders like the horses do.

dougtami,
Its to late for us, but maybe we can have our scientist change our genetic code to grow tails again, and swat them.

After the rain we've had, I'm ready to roll in the mud - if that's the only solution for a mosquito repellant...

mosquitos are far more a pest and more deadly across the world BUT........watch out for spiders!!

I got bitten twice by Brown Recluse spiders on STX.. Do yourselves a favor and at least get the right information about them. They arent aggressive, but if you cross paths and get bitten, you will be in a living hell for many weeks or months. At least be prepared and google Brown Recluse spiders, about the bite symptoms, their habits and if you have the stomach check out youtube videos of draining spider bites. One of the most poisonous spiders to man and you dont even feel the bite most times....

ps i was bitten while i slept....6 days later i was in the ER.

OUCH!!! 😮

I have a marsh on one side and a canal on the other side of me (mainland) and when I take my dogs out I get about 10 bits in the 5 minutes I'm out there 🙁

Most of the time they don't leave a mark and I really think I've gotten used to them.

If you're a mosquito magnet, try whatever you can. Dengue's not a laughing matter here.

This stuff works and only takes a few sprays to cover your entire body:

I use it anytime I go out. It's small, cheap, and highly efficient. Deet is the deterrent in most bug sprays.

Meowruff.. I know you are new on island... have you checked your cistern's? Put bleach in them regularly. Check the areas around your home and find out where the buggers are breeding. This is the first step.. make sure you don't have any open water containers. Also, some plants are mosquito makers... like the ground orchid and the bromeliads. Eliminate them from your property if possible. The rains do make mosquitos worse but where you are and what you have around you compound the problem. Are you renting? Look for a place that has a good breeze and air flow. Turn on the fans.

Good luck. I love the fact that mosquitos like newbies more than us long time folks but I have sympathy for you because when I first moved here they thought I was the cat's meow... now you are the cat's meowruff! 🙂

I take it back... I'm sorry they like you but I'm glad they don't like me! 🙂

Thanks, limetime2 - Yes, you have passed the mosquito lovers over to our place. We are bleaching the cistern; we watch for standing water; this morning, I cut back plants around our entrances; I spray our place everyday; I wake up and spray myself. Surprisingly, they leave my husband alone. And, our vet gave us wonderful medicine for our dog that keeps the mosquitos off of her. (I want one of those pills!)

But, you're right - they'll eventually get the hint that I'm on the warpath and they'll find another newcomer to eat. I'm hoping that they discover that my blood isn't so tasty after while.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I just don't want to end up with scarred mosquito legs - I've seen some people walking around here and they look like they've endured mosquito bites for years and years and years! I figure that heaven will be St Croix - but affordable, crime free and mosquito free!

I heard srpaying on diluted white vinegar works too. I think that's why mosquitos don't bug me . . . I love vinegar - salads, pickles, french fries . . yum.

I read in the paper today that there are plants that produce chemicals to fend off mosquitos. I had heard this before but it's in the newspaper today so I thought I'd mention it.

Basil: Reples aphids, flies, mosquitoes and mites
Catnip: Repels ants, fleas, mosquitoes

Don't know if you have a garden box but ....anyway......FYI.

You guys rock! Now I'm going to be covered in mud with catnip, basil and plants hanging around my neck. I may just scare the mosquitoes away!
