I've been riding my bikes here for almost ten years...just keep an eye out and use your head, you won't have any problems. It just takes a little getting used to, that's all...

Bugt, if you pass an off-duty cop going up a hill after you've been drinking and you really hammer it so you are making lots of noise on your Harley, he may just swerve at you as you pass him! Happened to me! Caused me some brain damage and hadta work on the bike a bit...+ $25G in hospital bills...but I'm still on two wheels...

Well, gee....I could reply with "Ya wanna come over and sit on my hog?", but that might be a little too risque for the board! Haha!

I hear you Betty... I agree that the roads are a major issue that just can't be overlooked. I'm not even sure that passing lanes solve the safety issue... I think you really need dedicated bike/scooter lanes. But, I'm not sure you need them on every road... do you? And, really you might only need them around curves. I'd love to see a study of what it'd take to make the islands "safe" for bikes/scooters.

Very good point about the dogs... at 10 MPH a scooter is just a play toy for dogs. That's an accident waiting to happen.

I think the rain issue could be solved by making sure that you know the roads before taking to the scooter. Invest some time to study and plan your routes (the way a downhill skier studies the course). Only drive on routes that you've thoroughly studied.

How do you suppose they get away with renting the scooters on STT? You'd think tourists would be mangled all the time...

If there was a study to see what would make the road safe you could spend millions to hear you need sidewalks, bike lanes, and wider roads, but slower speeds would probably solve everything, just my thought. Man I'm pessimistic tonight, need a beer!!!! But who wants to go slower, not me hehe

On a positive note, I found that the nuby tires like dirt bikes worked amazingly well on very steep dirt hills and cement/asphalt roads covered with sand and gravel when you need to slow down. Roads similar or worse to STT. I have seen people fall on the same roads I flew by them and stopped very fast to help them out. The nubs give you tons of traction with the sand and gravel to reach down to the cement vs just sliding. I have experience both and plan on buying a nuby back wheel. Also I found that the front brake causes Jack knifing when you hit gravel and to use the back tire when going down on dirt/sand.

Where would you guys suggest buying a scooter or bike?
*Tropical Scooter had Taiwanese "non-available parts" scooters .
*I'm assuming Yamaha would be as spendy as a car.
*Biz Scooters had a 12,000 mile scooter for $1700

I'm thinking about shipping one over. I might have to go to a bike, but then my wife would be very hesitant to ride it. She just started riding again a month before we left because of gas prices.

Island Trader had very little stuff but was all anyone suggested. I'll look at the classifieds on this site tonight.

cheers and beers
