I am thinking to get my Tundra here is probably $2000. I was planning to put 1-2 bedroom suites in storage, but then was thinking that I will be paying at least $1000 to store them. Any ideas on adding furniture to a vehicle and doing a partial container?

I was wondering about packing a vehicle with household stuff & furniture? My brother did that with a vehicle that was shipped from North Carolina to California. It helped a lot with the move but I'm reading that you are charged a price per pound for these vehicles so maybe it's not such a good idea. I'm not ready to make the move for about 6-9 more months but I wondered if anyone would be interested in sharing a container.

The last time I checked it was around 6k for a 40' container from Philly. If you put a car in the container you can fill the car with whatever you want. If you ship a car seperately (roll on roll off) you can't put anything inside. You may also have to deal with some damage that way. Depending on the cars you may be able to fit 2 cars with furniture. Do the math and see what works best economically.

Thanks for the general estimate. I'll probably be moving in August, and I probably will want to store my good stuff and make sure I'm staying beyond a year to make it worthwhile.

I wouldn't bring furniture...it limits you buying as well as renting options, IMO. We put an custom fitted accordion style cover over the the bed of F-150 and was able to bring many household items, tools, etc. Several shipping companies will tell you that you that you cannot ship vehicle with items...not, true. I used International Logistics, out of STT and moved two vehicles to STX...ask for Meme.
Cannot wrap my head around that storage price. Your bedroom suites must be large, very large. If you just cannot part with them, I suggest you haul them to Arkansas where storage for two BR suites would run you under 50 dollars! If that much!!! SMH

Couldn't agree more. If you decide that island living isn't for you, shipping furniture back stateside is cost prohibitive. Hundreds of people every year discover this which is one of the reasons we can get such excellent deals on moving house sales here and furnish our caves with nice things not available on island! If you can't bear to get rid of it, put it in storage. If you decide to stay you can always have it shipped at a later date. Good luck!

You also run the risk of whatever you put in your vehicle going missing. The shipping companies will tell you they are not responsible.

I just checked storage units in that area. A 10x20 unit runs about $85.00 per month without insurance. Unless they want to store in an outdoor non climate controlled unit.

Do they provide insurance just in case items gets stolen or goes missing?

I heard they provide insurance when shipping only your car if it gets damaged or other problems happen during shipment.

I've been looking on CL and on the Caldwell Banker website, and a lot of the houses are unfurnished. I saw one house that was advertising $1200 a month unfurnished or $1800 a month furnished. I figure rather than pay $6000 for someone else's furniture for a year, it might be worth it to throw that money towards shipping, then if I leave in a year, I can having a garage sale and make money on the deal.

I heard Tropical does not provide insurance. I don't know what other shippers do. I remember reading from someone a few years ago he refused to ship his tools here because the employer insited on using Tropical because they were cheaper than the shipper he wanted to use.

You can get cheap furniture here, either by buying it from the womens coalition or animal flea markets or just waiting for somebody to move off island. If your car is nice, sell it in the states, buy something cheap here. That's what I'd do.

Of course if you want to bring a bunch of nice stuff and then don't stay, I'll see you when you leave. 😉

You won't make any money on the deal - you'll get pennies on the dollar at best. Plus many people put stuff up for sale when they're leaving and for whatever reason it just doesn't sell in their time frame and they end up having to just leave it behind/donated to charity ... leave it behind!

I was just thinking of this. So rather than pay $6000 for someone else's furniture, I can rent an unfurnished and furnish it from the flea market. Still much less. My brain wasn't thinking. I'm not picky, I can make chicken salad out of chicken shit. And I'm coming from North Carolina, where furniture is so cheap (for quality, some even made in the USA) lots of people from all over the states and beyond choose to buy from and ship. So while my current furniture is nice, it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Another thing to bear in mind is that most unfurnished rentals do include a stove and 'fridge while many also are what one should really call "partially furnished" in that a bed is included, sometimes even a couch or a chair or two. You can always pick up an inexpensive airbed at KMart and make do with that for a while.
