first question is do they do the regular checks to approve you for apartments.( credit/background)- And i was thinking of staying in a hotel for a little while untill i get a job and apartment. How much do they usually run per night? I am 23 and just looking for a change. will it be hard to find decent employment? any help is appreciated. thanks

What island are you interested in? I am new on island but I am also a landlord. Credit checks are up to the landlords. Apartments that are connected to houses are probably your best bet.

Hello,

You really need to do more research and decide which island it is you are interested in. You named 3 out of 4 of the populated islands, so its hard for us to give suggestions that are specific.

Click on the Home link at the top of this page and then read through the Apartment section so you get an idea of what apartments are like here. Also go to the Cost of Living section. Many apartments are individual units rented out by landlords so it is up to them to do the credit check if they want to... not many do but some might ask for references. Almost all ask for 1st, last and security deposit at move in.

Hotels, as this is a tourist destination hotels are $90-$300+ a night. Small guesthouses and inns roughly $60-$120/night. That is just to give you an idea. People do stay in small hotels/guesthouses for a few days while finding an apartment, that is pretty much the norm. If you were moving to St. John, there are campgrounds there so that is an option too.

Employment - what job field?

jps,
You are setting yourself up to make a very big and very expensive mistake. You need to do a lot more research before you even seriously consider moving to the USVI. Buy "The Settler's Handbook". Memorize it. Come visit the islands, not on vacation. Look at the stores. Look at the various places to live. Talk to the people who live on each island. Each one is very different from the others. Different people have different needs and each island has something to offer. Like Islander told you earlier, go back to the home page and read "What to Expect".

If you do your research diligently, and still feel the USVI is for you, you will have a very positive experience here. If you don't, you will probably be very miserable here, not to mention wasting a lot of time and money. I'm not trying to rain on your parade. My wife and I love it here. But we worked on our move for over a year. Yes, we pested a lot of folks on this board with our questions (as Islander), but we also went through two revisions of "The Settler's Handbook". Even with all our study and preparations, there were some pretty scary moments. Do your homework, then come back to the board with your questions. Everyone here will be happy to advise you.

Ric
