My husband is being considered for a very lucrative job offer in the VI and we've never been. I am excited about this site, it's been very helpful.

My question is this: we are an interracial couple w/2 girls and currently live in CA...and face "weird" looks even today from people! So that doesn't bother us.....just wondering how it's accepted down there?

Also, our teen will be in 8th grade and wondering what area would be best for us? Some say St. Thomas--

We are city people, but do like the laid back style.

Also, we are a Christian family that is looking for a church.

Thank you everyone,
hope we aren't too"square" for the board here!

Cathy

Can't answer all your questions but, welcome! The "squarer" the better! Interracial here doesn't get strange looks to the best of my knowledge ... this is quite a melting pot. One of the mom's could answer best the school question. Christian churches abound. Let us know when you are coming and I am certain one or more of us would be more than happy to introduce you to our church family.

Good luck!

I am also part of an interracial couple and have a nine year old daughter. Moved her five years ago from California. Don't receive the "looks" at all. This island is great. I love St. Thomas. Email me with any questions you have about moving or schools, etc.

Hello Cathy and welcome!

I agree with those that already responded. You aren't going to get weird looks. Quite a few interracial couples here in the VI, and also "mixed" kids. Not an issue. Mentioned 'mixed' as that is the term most school kids and adults use here. Political correctness or lack of it sometimes causes offense. And some people coming from the states are often surprised by the open use of terms like Black, White, Mixed rather then politically correct terms like African-American, Caucasian and Bi-racial. Also many West Indian Blacks, even if American, would not call themselves African American but rather West Indian because of a greater nationalistic attachment to the Caribbean. (Ok, got a little side tracked but hopefully that information will be useful to you.)

You mentioned your husband has a job offer. Which island is it on? You said some folks suggest St. Thomas as good area for schools; well St. Thomas is the island and there are quite a few schools here. If you were living on St. Croix then coming to St. Thomas for school wouldn't be an option, but if you were on St. John then it would be. So let us know which island it is you will be living on. Do you have a preference for private, public or parochial (Christian) school?

What Christian denomination are you a member of? Baptist & Catholic are the largest here in the VI but other congregations also exist. There are quite a few churches.

Again welcome to the board!

PS: You might enjoy reading moving story #2 (it’s written by an inter-racial couple that moved from California). There are a bunch of stories in that section, read through a few of them. Here is a link:

Thanks Islander for your help! We aren't into "politically" correct, our kids are MIXED! in more ways than one! LOL Seriously though, thanks~and we are non-denominational, so any church that is "fun" would be cool.

The position would be based in St. Croix, is that a good area? I've been reading that the H/S system there has "problems" with accreditations----our oldest will be in H/S in a year...so that concerns me.

My husband if he gets the position would be going down before us and living for 1-2 months prior to us moving there....we know that we would have to stay for a least a year to a year and a half(that is what the standard contract would be)

I am SOOOO ready for a move and a change in lifestyle!

Thank you also for the stories, I will check them out.

Again, thanks to everyone that has responded to me, this is really helping us tremendously! I am so glad I found this site.
