Moving Tips & Large Dogs

Our planning is in the process and we're researching as much as possible. We like St.Croix the most and will be visiting soon for a few weeks.

We're seperating from the military so they will be assisting in moving our things but we plan on selling most of it.

Our concern is that we have an older english mastiff. We found two airlines that will fly her(our move will be in late October) but I'm worried about finding an apartment or rental home. She's a super laidback dog, rarely barks, and sleeps most of the time.

We'd also have a toddler who has a speech delay so I'm hoping we can find a good pre-school and speech therapist.

Anyone have any experiences with pre-schools and moving with a large dog? Thanks!

We found out Delta and Continental will ship our dog. Our best option is to drive from the base we are stationed at now down to Miami. Ship our dog from there so she doesn't have a long flight and then we can get a one way from there.

We also have a minivan but thinking of taking it with us and trading it for a truck or something once we get there.

Key thing is you said you plan to visit first. Give it an honest go and look at rentals, price of groceries and utilities, job situation, quality of medical care (which in our experience with our child leaves a LOT to be desired), etc. and then see about getting the big dog here. Many may disagree but I think for now (and hopefully not for much longer?) things are in decline here between the recent and possible upcoming Hovensa layoffs, upcoming government layoffs, rising crime, etc.

There are many great things about St. Croix but you have to be realistic if you are looking to bring a young family here.

I would think a vital area to research would be the speech therapist...does anyone here on the board know of a decent one on St Croix?

Re: finding a speech-language pathologist...You can either try asha.org and follow the links to "find a professional" or you can try the various government programs: Birth to Three, Head Start, Special Ed, etc. If you are going to do this privately, you will need to make sure your health insurance pays for it. I don't know if any preschools offer speech as part of their curriculum. Some private practitioners do provide services at some schools here on St Thomas, maybe the same on St Croix.
