Hello, i am moving to christiansted in st. croix next month. I currently live in boston, ma and work as a software engineer/consultant and am slightly concerned with the highspeed internet access on the island specifically in christiansted. Can anyone give me info regarding the price, connection speed, downtime, reliability of the highspeed internet offered. I noticed that only DSL is available and not broadband which should not be a problem unless connections are slow. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Do a search on this board for "internet" or "broadband"- you'll find a lot of answers to your questions.

DSL is a technology for delivering broadband. Broadband is available in the Virgin Islands. It can be delivered via DSL (over phone lines), wirelessly (terrestrial wireless product) or via satellite.

High speed internet is available in Christiansted.
Ackley Communications offers residential service for $99/ month. Ackley is the only provider on the islands that offers guaranteed speeds. Residential speeds are 192 kilobits per second upload and download. Business rates start at 256kbps ($199/month) and go up to multi-megabit/sec. www.ackleycomm.com or www.surfvi.com for more information.

Ackley Communications offers broadband via terrestrial wireless links. They offer guaranteed speeds, service level agreements (SLAs) and technical support.

Other providers are Choice Communications (who also offer wireless broadband- they call it WDSL- no speed guarantees or outage credits) and VIPowerNet (local telephone company's true DSL --i.e., wireline-- offering).

If you're concerned about latency and speeds, I wouldn't recommend satellite. It's ideal for one-way mass distribution of content (like TV)- not so great for internet. Again, no speed guarantee.

Good luck with your move.

Best,

LR

Since 1995, stateside, i have had cable broadband with speeds around 2.5 to 3 mps...down here (stx), it is very expensive and slow...i think innovative has a special right now for 3 months at $40, then back to $50 thereafter...speeds (i was told) are maxed out at 256 download. But, hey, they do have T1 connections starting at $2500 per month! I can click on a site (like this one) and go make a sandwhich while a page loads. Oh well, we choose to sacrifice many modern conveniences for the rum and 365 paradise!

Good point, Squeeterz- it is expensive down here- for providers as well as customers!

Your internet doesn't have to be slow, though 😉 Ackley Communications offers guaranteed speeds. It's cheaper with Innovative--- but you don't get any guarantees.

And you can get a T1 (1536kbps) from Ackley for 995/month 😉

Best,

LR
