You will almost certainly need some sort of vehicle of your own, unless you will be living and working in the same place. I haven't used it, but I've read that public transportation is unreliable. Taxis get expensive fast. The island is probably bigger than you think. It takes perhaps 45 minutes to get from one end to the other, and it's congested in Christiansted and around Sunny Isle in the middle of the island-that slows you down. I'd be lost without my truck.

The main roads are generally OK. Then we have bush country-back roads on the plains and in the mountains where a 4-wheel drive vehicle is ideal. I assume a bike would be OK on these if you lean way forward when going up steep hills.

Stephen,
Good luck on your move, we really like it here. The island is actually pretty big-84 square miles; 23 miles long and 7 wide at widest point. Transportation is necessary if you need to get around on a timely schedule. People have motorcyles here but the curvy roads, pot holes etc can make it interesting. I just talked with one new islander and he shipped his motorcyle here and had to go around and pay various people the taxes on it before being able to get it. We did not ship a vehicle/bike so did not go through all that. Even if 23 miles long does not sound far you are looking at 20-35 mph in most places so it takes a bit longer-but it is a nice ride. I felt somewhat stranded the first week I was here with no vehicle and I live mid-island and did not have to get to work. I hope that helps.

thanks for the feedback, its great to hear the experience of others in the moving adventure. i still havent found a good source for the apartment/condo rental availability there. if anyone knows of a few listings or a good avenue to find a place
(studio or 1 bedroom up to $700 mo.) please let me know.
thanks.

Hello Stephen,

I have to agree with those that responded, you will want transportation on St. Croix. While you can make do by living close to work and living close to a bus route... having your own transportation will make things much more convienient and easy and of course open up options for where you can stay and work.

Stephen,
You might want to try the real estate agent, Dorothy Gilroy; American Rentals and Sales. She was helpful in finding a short term and long term rental for us quickly. You can reach her at 340-773-8470 in STX.
