Moving to St Thomas!

Hello! I'm 25 and currently living in New Orleans. My boyfriend and I are planning the move to St Thomas for beginning of October. We are both servers/bartenders and looking to find service industry jobs for the busy season. We've never been to any of the USVI before so need some recommendations on good places to look for an apartment that will be near the busy bars/restaurants. Thank you!

Monet

The first recommendation you'll get from most of us is to do a pre move visit. Don't just jump in head first. Island life can be challenging. Where will you stay until you find housing? How will you get around? Are you buying a car when you arrive? Do you have enough money to sustain the two of you if you can't find work right away?
You have to ask yourselves these and lot's of other questions before you move to an island on a whim. It ain't Disney World.

Yes, for myself with a family, a PMV was a must, but if I was mid twenties and free, I would have considered that move without a PMV.

True fa true! The OP sent me a PM for my opinion which I was happy to give along with some suggestions related to her questions. Hope it works out for her!

At 25, footloose and free of encumberences, why not?
You will absolutely need a car to get around so budget for that and housing. It's more expensive to live in the VI, so be prepared.

I would imagine it depends on your level of service and skills as to where you'll be hired but lots of jobs in that industry and October is a good time to begin the job search prior to high season starting.

You can check Craig's List to get an idea of rental prices.
Maybe Crystal Palace has availability for your first couple weeks until you get your bearings and a feel for the job market. You'll have to decide on where you'd like to work and apply at those places if they have openings.

Or you can check on www.flipkey.com or vrbo.com for weekly vacation rentals. October is still considered off season so rates will be lower at that time.

A car will be a must.

Why? Are they immune from the high attrition rate? Should they not know what to expect?

Attrition happens with or without a PMV. Before I had a family, and knowing what I know now, the move to STT at 25 would be easy. If you fail, no real harm. If I fail now, with a family, I fail 3 of us.

I came to visit friends who'd recently moved to STT and stayed for 4 days, was offered a job (I wasn't even looking), went back stateside to mull it over and, two months later, mailed a few boxes of possessions and then hopped on a 'plane with my dog and my cat. That was over 30 years ago and I'm still here. Without a family it's easy - with family to consider it's way more complicated decision to make. Spartygrad got it right.

Hey "likes to argue guy"? Find once where I said she should do it? If you would like I can repost all my comments? So, a month long PMV is better financially than a one month "get me the F back to the States move"? If you want to argue or debate, pick a topic, I'm game. Don't put words in my mouth though. I said FOR ME at 25, I would CONSIDER a move without a PMV

I moved here sight unseen, with a 1 way ticket at 25 and am still here many decades later -It certainly can be done at a young age with no dependents ------ network - get a job - find your niche - don't get too caught up in party time and start forming the friendships that will enrich your life.

Close enough. And yes. Spending a thousand instead of 10k is a little better. Unless of course with your "devil may care" attitude you could front them.

Where are you going to spend $1000 for a PMV? Swimming here? Sleeping in a tent? Walking?

Maybe we should just hug it out? My only point was for ME at 25 it would have been easier decision than ME at 42.
