I'm planning on moving in a few weeks to Cruz bay, by myself. I wont have a car is it safe to walk places alone? at nigh? should i think of getting a car? People are starting to make me nervous, I was super psyched to move now I'm starting to believe every one when they tell me I'm crazy.

Which Cruz bay? The one where the ferries come in, or Great Cruz Bay which is further south?

If the former and depending on where you will be working (assuming you will be working...), I think you could get by without a car. If the latter, it could be difficult without a car.

As for safety, as a general rule I do not walk around at night, other than going from my car to my destination. I live on STT.

HI

My husband and I are hoping to move to STJ soon. I would love to hear more about your plans. My mom and I are going down on June 1st for another week on the island to look around. This will be my 3rd visit in a year. I love it there. Do you have a job already? If we live in Cruz Bay by the ferry, wewill not bring our car. However, we don't intend to bring it right away anyway until we see what our situation will be. The shipping fees are pretty high for acar so we want to see if it is necessary. I email with a couple already on the island and I think walking around during the day to work, errands ect is fine but I dont think I would be as comfortable at night. I go through stages of nervousness about moving down as my husband is in the army and when he is away I will be alone. Our house is up for sale and he is in Iraq but after that............................. PM me if you like!

I'm planning on moving to the Cruz Bay where the ferries go. I didn't even know there was a second one.
Thanks for your help.

Just curious, and don't mean to offer up a mean question, but

Have you ever been to STJ? It sounds like it!!!!

Nope, never been. but i have some friend who spend the winter on st. Thomas. So they will be there in a few months. I know its not the norm to just go some where with out ever visiting first but thats what i do when ever i move some where new and it has always worked out just fine.

My best suggestion is to purchase a round trip ticket with the return open ended. Bring lots of money. For some reason I think this might be one of the tougher moves than your others. But go, do it and enjoy. It's a beautiful island that I will be visiting again at the end of June. You'll have lots of fun while you're working and living on STJ.

Just do it and don't let the naysayers dissuade you from this part of your life's journey.

jacqui,
if it is just you, have at it and best of luck. If you have kids, that's another story. Best of luck...you'll have an interesting learning curve. I agree with promo - brings lots of cash.....$10-15,000 minimum.

Thanks, but are you serious $10,000 or 15,000?! i just graduated college, dont think i even made that much all year last year. people must go down there with less to start off with and make it by. i know its expensive but i already have a job and apartment lined up so i dont see needing that much money when i get there

And that is where you would be incorrect...especially on STJ. It is VERY expensive. If you have a place to stay and an apartment, then you're ahead of the curve.....but you will find your money won't take you very far unless you have some really special job lined up....

It depends. Will the apartment require first, last & a month's security deposit as many do or is the apartment/your room included with the job? Will the utilities be included? If not, you will need money for utility deposits. Check with your employer. Are you sharing the place?
