my wife and I are coming down next week for a PMV and to look at rental properties. based in part on comments we have read here about crime rates, we've mostly been focusing our attention on Christiansted and the east end.

does anyone here have any advice on which areas of the island are "best"?

I'm a scuba diver, so quick access to good dive sites would be great, but my #1 requirement is good Internet access, as I am a remote worker.

I've seen a few posts here about west end being nicer climate-wise. is there really a big difference in crime on west vs east?

It would get real old driving 30-hour to dive. Just search the forum. This subject has been beat to a pulp 🙂 and you'll find all the info you need. I would never live east, personally. I guess I won't say "never"... if money was no object and I didn't care about a $300-$500 wapa bill for whole house AC I would consider it but then again I'm a diver and within 5 minutes I'm at the pier with seahorses and frog fish.... So no I wouldn't live east lol. I feel safe west, including nights at dog in Frederiksted until 3am. Not alone of course or being stupid. A couple weeks ago we closed up dog, it was so much fun. Unfortunately that's about all we have west for fun. Everything else closed up by 8 or earlier.

I work remotely as well and have innovative that works in the rainforest just fine. I don't need skype or anything, I do website design and I have no problems. Word of advice - if you need to have service every day with no interruptions you'll need a generator here for sure. Power and Internet go out often. Usually I just take a break, go dive lol or clean but after a week without power after a little rain I broke down and got a generator. Now I can't imagine not having one!!

I've lived east as far as Hermon Hill and La Grand Princesse and even downtown Christiansted. I currently live west and absolutely love it! All my places have had beautiful views as well. I'm elderly, live alone 1/2 year as husband works summers in Massachusetts and have never been afraid. Be prepared to buy water to fill your cistern if you live further east. I've never had to buy water. Living west just into the Rainforest, I find life quiter than any place I've lived. I'm loving the peaceful west end! I get over to C'sted about twice per week.
