So I just signed my contract and am arriving on the island (STX) Jan 2 with a 1 way ticket. My boyfriend and I are looking foward to the adventure that follows! If anyone knows of any housing available- we are looking for a safe, preferably gated, furnished 1 bd/1ba with an ocean view. Within walking distance to the beach a plus. We are also looking for a "island car" as our plans to stay could be 3 months or 3 years and don't want to ship down our car just yet. The cheaper the better- as long as it runs it's a good car to me! My boyfriend is an electrician and will be looking for work once we arrive on the island-- if anyone knows where the best place to start looking is please let us know! He's also open to bartending, boat cleaning- whatevers available that pays the rent. If anyone has any friendly advice, I'll take that too. 🙂

Good luck! Check the Classified section of this board & you might luck into a rental. Maybe a car, too. Just don't rent a place sight unseen.

Will you boyfriend be liscensed down here, I believe skilled labor is always in need here. I've been told that many of the older homes aren't up to modern building codes...or at least mine isn't.

Thanks for all the replies- I am looking to spend $1500-$1800/mos on rent, utilities included are a plus cause I hear electric is ridiculous. I live in the south and the weather is pretty most of the time- Im used to spending maybe $100/mos on electric-- I hear I will be shocked. About the boyfriend- he's not licensed bc hes worked for the same company for 10 years and the owner is licensed (its not really common practice to get licensed here if the person you work for already is- he told me you normally get licensed if you start up a company). Im hoping hell be able to find work pretty soon- does anyone know where he would even start looking for an electrical job?

The Labor department has posting of all available jobs including HOVENSA Refinery. They always need experienced personnel for the Turn Arounds (Scheduled Maintenace Outages). You can find rentals at your price throught oput, such as Mill Harbor. $4-5000 will get you a 2002-2004 ex rental car such as at Olympic Rent A car.
A job with many of the contractors at HOVENSA can become permanent if so desired.

I wouldn't rely on the website, during my job search I found that the labor dept. website is not updated/complete. Go down to the office in Sunny Isle (just east of Kmart) the receptionist will have a hard-copy you can look through. Make sure you bring your own pen, and I was scolded my first trip for wearing shorts and sandals....seriously.

For any government office, a pair of long pants and a short sleeved, collared shirt, like a polo shirt, is the preferred look. More respectful.
