Looking for a little advice...

Myself and two other girls are planning to move to St. John between the end of August and the beginning of Sept. We are looking for any advice that we can get from some people who have done the same thing. The three of us have just graduated from the University of Wisconsin and are looking to get out the COLD!!! We all have been working in the service industry for at least three years and are looking to do the same in St. John. I understand finding an apartment is the hardest part of the move- any tips of where to start looking or who to contact??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just graduated from Marquette and am planning on moving to St. Thomas in August. At least if it's cloudy and rainy it will be warm!! Just curious - why St. John?

Apparently there is only one property rental office on STJ, unless some of the real estate agents handle SOME rentals. It's Scenic Properties (no website), but they've been very helpful. My husband and I are moving to STJ August 30th and did our pre-move visit/ honeymoon in October. The problem with moving during late summer is that the island is DEAD and many of the local businesses close. I would buy a great book called "Virgin Islands: ALIVE"....it's a travel book but has all of the restaurants and their phone numbers listed. It's been a great book to have for our pre-move research.
Good Luck
Amanda

We have chosen St. John because my friend, one of the three, has a family friend who lives and owns a bar on St. John. He and his wife are the ones who have helped us to turn this into a reality. They are willing to check out places for us, but we also would like to take on as much as possible while still in the states.

Do you have the number of Scenic Properties?

Thanks!

340/693 7771 Scenic Properties

What bar do your friends own, if you don't mind my asking? HAve you been to STJ before? We've been researching our move for a year now and I have learned a lot of valuable information. But I also know people who can just up and move, no problem.
"The Settlers Handbook" is a handy guide, but somewhat discouraging. How long are you looking to stay on STJ?
Take care

Amanda,
What did you find discouraging about the Settlers Handbook?

I just didn't find it very helpful. I've found more helpful information online and by the time I received the Handbook, the only thing I really learned had something to do with cisterns! I personally found it discouraging, although I understand that there are people who won't (and don't) make it in the USVI. I'm fully aware of the "sink or swim" theory.
The MOST helpful has been this very website and I even found several contacts for possible jobs.
Thanks to all!!
Amanda

Sorry I didn't give specifics on the book........I lent it to a friend and don't have it right in front of me.
