Moving to the States?

Hey everyone,

I may be making a big move to the states, maybe Nevada or Kansas. I do plan on shipping my car up, but what to most people do when it comes to sending up personal belongings? I've read that I can't put anything in the trunk of my vehicle.

I know regular snail mail is an option, but has anyone tried to send up a pallet on Tropical or Crowley? What about having that pallet delivered from port to door?

Just comparing options.

I've lived in the USVI all my life and this is a big step!

Call VI Cargo, they can handle your car & personal items. We used them to move to STX & they were awesome! Not sure about port to door = KS or NV. But STX to Miami no worries.

FYI - Kansas is COLD in the winter!!!!!
Good Luck on your move 🙂

I thought VI Cargo does not take any shipments to the states. Just from the States to STX. ???

Moved back in January and everything went extremely smoothly.

We shipped all of our books/CD/DVD's via USPS Media rate. Did all the shipment online and just dropped off the boxes (18 of them) at the Post Office in Richmond. It can take 6-8 weeks to get to the destination as they don't ship until they have a full container.

We then packed about 17 boxes with 'stuff' and shipped them USPS Priority Mail.
Took 3 days to get there and all was good.

Most of our clothes went in suitcases a bit at a time when we travelled to the new place. We each get 3 bags free so it was advantageous to do it that way. We also filled up some coolers with china and things and checked them as baggage too.

We then boxed up everything else (44 boxes) and shipped them using Fleming Transport.
They came and picked it all up, palletized it, shipped it sea to Miami and then carrier to where we are. They delivered it to our door and nothing was damaged.
We sold our houses furnished so it was all personal items, tools, artwork, etc.

Sold our car with the house nad leased a new one when we got to the new location.
Really easy!.

BB207X: Consider selling your car in the VI, and not shipping it to the states. Your car is worth more in the VI than in the states. Your car gained value when it shipped here (and you already paid for that value), and you'd be paying to lose that value by shipping it back.

I bought my car used, a couple years ago (on island) when it was valued at over 25k. Paid less than half that. KBB fair condition currently puts me at 14k to a private party. It was bought brand new on-island.

I personally know how hard it is to sell decent cars down here, considering when most people looking to spend over 14k bring something down from the states.

I'd prefer to just run it into the ground, especially since I got it for a steal. *-)

When people move off island the cars they sell can be deeply discounted. I purchased a truck valued at $18,000 for $10,000.

On the other hand, low value beaters sell for more than they should because of demand for "cheap" cars. Beware though. Friend just bought an inexpensive vehicle. First the AC went, now one of the differential gears seems messed up..........

Timing is everything!

Need to ship a 20 ft FCL container from STX to the mainland. Just household goods and we plan to meet the container in Florida. We need to have someone palletize and load for us. Any recommendations? We've checked with Tropical and they don't pick up, load or palletize. Thanks. 😎
