Hello. I'm totally new to this message board...so may need alittle help. I want to ask a question. I'm on Social Security Disability, due to health problem's. I'm seriously considering moving to The U.S.V.I. probably St. Thomas, although not sure about that one...since I've never been to The U.S.V.I. I have a friend that I've known since High School who lives in St. Thomas. I've been to Jamaica 5 times...I love Jamaica, but I can't live there and get my Social Security Checks. Since I am on Disability, I'm qualified to live in section 8, or low income housing. I called The Social Security Administration...I asked them if I could live in The U.S.V.I. and get my checks sent there, and I asked them if there was section 8 housing there...they said yes to both. Ok, what I was wondering...is this possible, or am I just dreaming here? I have no family...my health is deteriorating...I'm 55 year's old...I want to live there. I live in Kansas now...I can't deal with the winter's here...kind of feel like I don't have much to lose. I just don't want to get myself in a situation of being homeless in The U.S.V.I. You know? Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail address is: ilikejamaica@yahoo.com if anyone would care to contact me via e-mail. Thanks much. IB

IB: You really need to read through the archives on this board. Your message sends up several red flags:
1. The health care system here is not what it is in Big America. If you have chronic conditions, you need to find out if the appropriate physicians and programs are available.
2. Do you currently have health insurance? Yes, you can use Medicare here, but to get on the Medicaid/Medical Assistance program, it will be a struggle.
3. You may be qualified for Section 8 housing, but practically, I doubt you will get it. You might be placed on a waiting list. And wait.

What does your friend say about your dream? Maybe Hip Crip will comment, also.

IB: I wholeheartedly second East Ender's comments.

With all due respect, your disabilities and "deteriorating" health, along with your financial limitations, make the Virgin Islands a very poor choice for you.

I'm sure there are warmer areas within the United States which would be better able to accomodate you and which would be able to offer you a more comfortable way of life than you presently have in Kansas.

My best wishes and good luck.

Thanks much for the input...and the honesty...and also the kindness. I still have a great desire to be there. I have a pretty good idea of Island life...being in Jamaica 5 times, staying for 6 months at one time. There's just one thing...I feel like I have nothing to lose by moving to The U.S.V.I....I have absolutely nothing here. Also, I have only about two to three year's to live, so why not live where your dreams are? I wish I could live in Jamaica, but I can't have my Social Security Checks sent there...not the U.S.A. I have friends in Jamaica who would help me alot...I could get an apartment for $100.00 U.S. per month,, but then you have to eat, etc. I could get by on pain medication...can I get that there? I take Oxycontin. I would rather die there than here in Kansas. I could work...are there any Rest homes or Hospitals in The U.S.V.I.? I was, or am a Paramedic. I just don't feel like I want to sit here and waste away...you know? God, Kenny Chesney makes it sound so easy on his new CD...You know? Could I be a Bartender? I would do anything to just live the rest of the time I have left to live in Paradise. Anyway, thanks for the responses...anyone thinks of anything that I could do...PLEASE let me know. Much respect, mon. Do they say that in The U.S.V.I.? or is that a Jamaican thing? IB
