I have been offered a teaching job on St. John and need to find a place to live either on St. John or St. Thomas. The job is at a private school and doesn't pay much, so I can't spend a lot on rent or buying a home right now. I need a safe place to live where I can bring my 2 beagles and finance. Do you have any suggestions where to look for an apt. or home while I'm still here in NY State? Thank you. Barbara

I also posted this on the other message board. Thanks!

Barbara,

Have you already set a budget for housing in utilities There are plenty of condos have studio and 1 bedroom units for rent on St. Thomas, but they are usually higher. I'm not sure about St. John, but I have heard it's more expensive there. There are many STT/STJ commuters. The believe the ferry from Redhook to STJ has initial boats at 6:30 and 7:30 a.m. and then runs hourly from 8:00 a.m. until midnight, so commuting wouldn't be a problem. Plus you would have one of the most beautiful (and shortest) commutes in the world. Something to brag about to your friends and family back home. If you can't afford to rent a condo, most other apartments are actually upper or lower levels of houses. For this you would need to schedule a scouting trip to the Islands. If you would like, I can email you the contact info for a property manager at a condo that is less than 10 minutes from Redhook.

Good Luck!

Chris

Hello Barbara,

Its difficult to find apartments from away and you will want to look at it before committing. You might ask your contacts at the school whether they have a bulletin board where they could put up an ad for you asking if any of the faculty has an apartment to rent maybe. You might also call Connections and inquire about putting up a looking for an apartment ad on their bulletin board for you or perhaps seeing if there are any ads for vacancies (Connections is a business on St. John that offers a range of services like mail, faxing, telephone ect and has a bulletin board where folks put up ads). (340)776-6922 for Cruz Bay and (340)7794994.

Staying on St. Thomas and taking the ferry over is an option; lots of folks do it, as an alternative if nothing turns up on St. John.

You can try some of the small inns on St. John for a temporary place to stay until you find an apartment.
