Hi!

We are selling most of our things before we leave in June and just plan on purchasing a lot of new stuff to replace what we can not ship once we are on the island. I have two questions about this.

First, is there some kind of rental place on the island where we could rent a truck or van to transport any furniture items we purchase for our new apartment since we will not have a vehicle as soon as we move there?

Secondly, can anyone recommend places with good deals on furniture and household items? A store that sells second-hand furniture would also be great to know of as long as the furniture is nice and in good condition.

Any help would be great. Thanks!!

Kelly, most of the places that sell furniture offer delivery. There are two places that sell second hand stuff. You would need to hire a small truck to help. They are not hard to find. You can get the Island Trader when you get here. There are a lot of house sales in there of people leaving island. I have found some good deals there too!

Island Tip: Most of the furniture stores on St. Thomas are owned by realtives, an uncle in this store, a cousin in the other... and they are excellent sales people almost to being rude in terms of pushiness and tricks. So be aware; it doesn't always happen... however I had a coworker buy a table that got a piece broken as it was carried out the warehouse- the delivery people said we will glue it- she said No way I want a new one. They argued until she said forget it, then had to argue to get a refund. Another women got a sofa with two different colored cushions (beige with flowers, black with flowers (3 cushions of one color 1 of the other) she was told it was a style and then the third bought a washing machine that for some reason had wet paint on it to cover some dings and rust. I wouldn't say there is a huge variety since the stores are owned by the same people so they have similar products. There are a couple used goods spots like Ronnie mentioned. Also there are a couple individually owned stores that sell antique furniture and unique peices from foreign countries. K-mart and Office Max have desk and pre-fab tables. Also will find some good deals at yard sales - look in the paper as recommended.
