Hello all!

We are moving to STT after summer and are busy taking care of all things to do so.
We are wondering what we really should bring with us concerning household things.
Can you buy nice furniture on STT? What kind of things can we not get on the island etc...

As we are from Europe we wont bring much of electrics because of the differnt voltage but we want to know if maybe we should buy more stuff first in Miami before coming down.
We will ship over a container with all kind of stuff but we do not want to take everything.

I would appreciate any experiences on this matter!

Thanks
Inge

My experience in St Thomas is that the furniture on-island is either not of a good quality, or teak and remarkably over-priced. There are several retailers that will offer to ship something in for you from their catalogue, but be prepared for a significant mark-up. I ordered all of our furniture from off-island, had it shipped to Miami and then sent down by CaribTrans.
As far as appliances, we have pretty much everything unless you have a very specific specialty item in mind. If so, you should bring it.
If you have a special or favorite beauty or personal item, bring several of those too. For example, we have very little in the way of organic or natural hygiene products (Weleda comes to mind).

Good luck and welcome to St Thomas!

En tussen twee haakjes, ben je Nederlandse?
If so, bring stroopwafels!

I agree with Onika in bringing furniture...We sold everything before moving and we had to replace it all. Bring things for a hurricane kit such as your flashlights, batteries, propane stove, etc...plastic storage containers are good to have..Things are very expensive here so if you would have to replace it when you get here, bring it...you may not find "it" here or it's overpriced.
Good luck!

Before bringing your furniture to the VI consider if it is suitable for use in a tropical climate.

There are reasons for using wicker, rattan or mohogany in constructing furniture for the tropics. If you have any items with particle board I wouldn't bring them. The particle board tends to swell from the constant exposure to moisture. Termites are a constant problem not just for structures, but they get into furniture also. It is not unusual to hzve to replace kitchen cabinets and vanities because termites have gotten into them.

If sometime in the future you are planning to return to a non tropical climate you might want to consider leaving your furniture behind. Unless you have whole house AC after a few years in the tropics your furniture maybe shot.
