I've been reading this message board for a few months and have found it very helpful. I'm moving to St Thomas the 10th of May and I was hoping I could get some suggestions on where to look for an apartment. I'm going to be working at the airport and am looking to spend 600-850 per month for a place thats furnished. I know that when I arrive I'll have to pick up the local papers to check out the classifieds, but what are the names of the areas near the airport. How can I narrow my search to a place with 20 minutes of the airport and if at all posssible, fairly close to the beach. Any info would be greatly apprciated as well as any specific rentals that may be available. Thanks for the help.

Hello Matt:
Will you have access to a vehicle? Or, are you planning on relying on public transport?
I ask b/c that will make a difference in your housing options. I live on the Northside (Hull Bay) and it only takes me 15 mins. to Frenchtown by car. So, if you have a car, you will have more options.
I am not familiar with the housing communities at the airport. But, another alternative is getting an apartment above or in town. Then you can take the safari buses to work, and to teh beaches. RONNIE, of Crystal Palace fame, might know of some rentals in or near town.
Perhaps someone else on the board might know if any of the condos or hotels at the airport do long-term?

Matt, as Onika mentioned if you have a car a great many areas of the island can be reached in 20 minutes the island is not that big. East End would be a bit far and some areas of Northside would take longer then 20 minutes particularly in traffic. However if you have a car then you could look into the west end of the island and the northwest as well. The beach closest to there would be Brewers Bay, which by the way you can sit on the beach and see the run way -as would be the case with some residential areas on the west end. Will you have a car??

Fortuna. Bonne Esperance, Lindberg Bay are some close by areas. There are lots of UVI students around because those areas are close to UVI, too. Honestly, Matt, having the names of areas is not going to help much. When you start your search, you will see. You just have to get out there, pound the pavement and network. You will need to look at the place personally to see if it is something that suits.

Yes, Onika is right. I have places that I rent, starting at $600 per month. I am right in town, at least a 10 minute walk to the waterfront, where you can catch a bus or dollar ride to the airport area. My place is set up for temporary living, no lease necessary, while you locate a permanent place that may be closer to your work!
