My husband and I were planning on relocating to St. Thomas at the end of the year but now not so sure. I am a Registered Nurse and thought I could find a job with Schneider Hospital until I started reading about the planned layoffs. Do they have a hiring freeze or is there still need for nurses? Thank you for any info.

They are constantly using traveling nurses here, so, look into one of those and then come here that way...I have known nurses to stay after their travel assignment was up..

There will always be a need for nurses. You can check the SRMC website: http://www.srmedicalcenter.org/ and call Marci Cohen, the nurse recruiter. Or you can go the travel route to get a taste of the place. I am blanking on the name of the company they use, maybe it is in the archives? The lay-offs so far have been non-essential personnel, and there are plenty to choose from....

I was reading your post for nurses. I am in the mental health field, caseworker, corrections.....any jobs available in this field that you are aware of?

Thank you

katherine: You can check the SRMC website. There is a Behavioral Health Unit at SRMC. Also there is a long term facility, Eldra Schulterbrandt. I think it is run by the Health Department, though, so would not be on the website. Another idea is the adolescent unit at Seaview. I would highly recommend you check these places out in person when you come to visit.

Some of the benefits to starting as a travel nurse include:

They pay for a round trip flight between the mainland and the island

They help to arrange your reciprocal license for St. Croix and you get paid through the travel nurse company so aren't waiting on your NOPA the same way direct hires are upon hiring into a permanent position.

They pay a housing stipend for the term of your contract (and you can do several contracts in a row before you have to take a contract period off and then can repeat the process... at least I've seen quite a number of travel nurses do that here on STX.

You can figure out if you want to be a direct hire before committing to that option and also possibly wait for the right opening to come along to go direct.

It's at least worth checking out.
