Pseudo Used Car Lots

Hi Everyone,

We finally made it here and it's all going really well, we are now shopping for our island car.
Today we called up for a car in the trader that was in the range we want to spend. We met the guy at a landmark and he took us to what i would describe as a psuedo used car lot. They didn't seem to be a dealer, just some guys selling a dozen cars in town.

Is this normal? Or is there something to look out for here?
The cars are at good private party prices, so there not to good to be true.

Thanks
Adam

Before you even start looking at used cars, ask people on this forum and any other people who you know about recommendations for mechanics who will come and look at a used car for you. The going rate is $50-$100 depending on distance for someone who knows about cars to check it out and tell you whether it's mechanically sound or not and, if not, what the price to fix will be. Where you see the car doesn't matter at all. You can get a crappy deal from an authorized used car dealer working from the dealership lot just as easily as you can get the same from a private seller working from what seems to be a "shady" lot.

Thanks. I had read some previous threads about that. I figured I would get the car taken to the mechanics, so they can get at the things they can get at better (i.e. with a lift and power tools)

People have seemed to recommend leonards on the board, but i'd welcome any other suggestions?

Thanks

Adam, you didn't say which island you're on.

Sorry STT.

One of the cars I'm looking at is in Charlotte Amalie, can anyone recommend a mechanic there? Lennards may be a little far out for them to take it.

Thanks
Adam

I bought a car from Carol at Budget on STX and it was a very good experience. They are very professional and courteous to deal with.

But they are not on STX, they are on STT.

I've always had good luck with Sean, 771-1165 (and, yes, that's St Thomas!)
