I have just came back from my trip to St thomas and i felt in love with a villa in the Peterborg area the house faces a cliff is beautiful . Even thou i am starting new business venture in St thomas is imperative that i have the best internet connection available in the area. Due to my business i need speed to download big files and i need reliability i am not so concern about the price even the prices in the VI for Broadband are EXPENSIVE? I do not think my house has line of sight for Choice but i read in the Message boards about other alternatives like Brodbandvi or something i have also heard that Innovative service is not reliable. I have choice to spend allot of money and get Direcway satellite internet but i want something local and good. In regards to tv i know there is Directv and dish available in STT but everytime it rains there goes your game i also heard of Choice and Innovative please advise

If, as you state, speed and reliability are imperative, you will need to have line of sight to an Ackley tower. We encountered the same challenges when we were house hunting on Peterborg, because we telecommute and have similar speed and reliability requirements, but we were fortunate to find a suitable home. We had to forgo our first choice house but it is an acceptable trade-off to be able to work from home. Alternatively, you can buy the house you love and rent a space elsewhere on island to work. Ackley is $99/month, extremely reliable, and faster than any other local provider (though not as fast as mainland providers.)

surfvi.com is ackleys site.

all the rates down here are horrible for very slow service.

what kind of big downloads are you doing?
are we talking art work or nightly builds of a dvd sized OS?

choice will cost you 1000 dollars a month for a mega bit connection. my state side connection was 40 dollars a month for a 3 megabit connection.

I just got sprints EV-DO service and it seems to be alright for 60 a month. I am going to get a external antenna for the card which should boost it up. I believe you can get up to 600kbps.

If you look in some earlier posts I asked some people to list their speeds.

If you are on the north side of peterborg and you can see ST John through the gap between Thatch and ST Thomas you will be able to pick up a Choice tower from ST John. Otherwise you will need to be able to see one of the towers that are on the peaks of ST Thomas.

I think the reliability of innovative depends on where you are on island.

I think my best choice is Hughesnet Formerly Directway satellite internet there is an Upfront cost for the equipment but i make the difference by paying low monthly payments comparing it to choice or ackley . I have just talk to Hughesnet they will send me the Satellite and Equipment for 599.99 there is also a installation fee i could have with this plan up to 3-4 outlets in the house there is a 24 month contract there is a termination fee. I will be paying 199.00 dollars per month for 2.0mb or more Downloads and uploads of 500 kpbs i had the system back in 2000 in a rural area of Puerto rico and it work fine sometimes when it was cloudy it was slower but nothing like 256kpbs. I talk to an agent he check my soon to be new house zip code and it is available in St thomas they will send the equipment via UPS and they will get an authorize Satellite installer in the area. I am telling you ackley 899 dollars or choice 699.00 this is Insane!!!!!!! By the way i read in one of this message boards that the CEO of Choice lives in Peterborg and that the area has a very good signal. I will probably use choice for Cable tv and phone?????????

It is incredible how bad they treat you guys down there for example the companies that feed Ackley and Choice are based in Puerto rico for example ackley gets its signal from Centennial Puerto rico (islanet) you could get 2.4 MB 600-800KPBS for no more 59.99 dollars????? Choice gets it form PRT which offers DSL in Puerto rico 5mb downloads for 39.99 the same goes with Broadband you get in Puerto rico from your Cable company 4-5mb for $ 40.00 or a little more depending the combo!!!! Right now here in Miami where i am i have Comcast my last test was insane 18 mb download and uploads 1.5mb Broadband is almost perfect it never goes away i pay $ 41.99!!!!!!! Just to let you know Comcast is slated to Buy Onelink Communications in Puerto rico cable company in San Juan metro area and in the same piece i read they are also interested in Buying a Cable company in the VI. By the way i was last week in San Juan already Circuit city open a great flagship store with anything you need at stateside prices in 2 months they are opening 2 more. Also my cousing told me today Bestbuy just open a hugh store in front Plaza Las Americas is said to be the largest of the chain. Also Compusa is reopening again after 2 months being close for 2 weeks is now own by Tiggerdirect. And to put the cheery on the frosting Apple store should Open in Plaza las americas in 6 months????????

I didn't mean to be curt, but if you think things like speed and cost of internet service will drive you insane, you ain't seen nothin' yet! 😉 BTW, the zip codes around here are based on post office or home delivery. Peterborg doesn't have a specific zip, if that is what you meant.

PR also has a much larger customer base than tiny little STT not to mention Miami. Prices always go down when there are lots more customers. That's basic Business 101.

Hughesnet is a satellite service available to all the virgin Islands US and Brittish and Puerto rico?????? when i gave them the Zip code they knew immediately it was St thomas they do have the service available like Dish does and Directv has. I do not understand why people in St thomas or Businesses that need speed do not used this system. I am well aware of the difficulties that are living in the Islands i grew up in Puerto rico yet more modern is still behinds the states. Believe me all me life i just to spend summers in the Islands and i know the feeling waiting 30 minutes for a Hamburger at Mcdonalds of going to a restaurant that does not have ice??? I know????

Maybe because of cost??? I don't know. Did you buy the place in Peterborg? I think East Ender might have a point.

roki: What sort of dish does your service require? There are folks who live in places who cannot have or do not want big satellite dishes, for one thing. Some people are satisfied with the service they have. Do you personally know St Thomians who have this service?

It may SEEM as though things should be available, but in reality they might not be. When you deal with stateside sales people, they may not have local knowledge.

What I meant about the zip code is that 00802, for example, is home delivery all over St Thomas, not a specific geographic indication.

First of all i am planning to buy a private home in the peterborg area i could put any kind of dish that i so desire???? also Hughes net told me that they do have big customers there like Banco Popular, UBS, that already use the system. I do not know personally any virgin islander that has it but i had the system in Puerto rico and one of my best friend has it in Culebra Islands 8 miles from the coast of St thomas. I think i will try the system but my real state agent just email me that the current owner of the house has Choice working perfect????? I'll see what happens i need a service that could download big Encad-autocad files thru emails so i am partner in a Engineering firm??????

roki: You asked why other people didn't use it. I don't know about your private home- is there a homeowner's association with rules? I was reacting to your statements about why is broadband so expensive and why don't Virgin Islanders use this satellite service, etc. If you have lived in PR, then you know that the Caribbean is not like the CONUS. 😉

My advice to people who think they want to live here is come for 6 months or so before you buy anything. This may or may not be the place for you.
