HEllo all! I;m new to this website, but I've been on it constantly for the past 2 days. My husband an dI have been considering moving to St. Thomas for the past 2-3 years. We just got back from a day there and are really diiving into researching what all we need to do to get there. I love St. Thomas, but would consider moving to any of the Vi's. Here are a few questions I have currently.

1. Which island is the best to move to? We want an island that is safe and relaxed and not too expensive.

2. What time frame would be good to give ourselves time to pack up here in the states and get reasy to move. We currently own our home and 2 cars. Would need to sell them and our properties. (Bed, TV, etc.)

3. I've read that it is easy to find a job, but I would not be copmfortable moving without one of us having one. I currently hold a management position that is fairly large. I make a average amount of money currently and would be looking for a career type position. My husband is an electrician. What are your reccommendations on employment?? What types of places whould I look for?

4. Do they have direct TV?? Or are you able to catch most NFL games? I know this sounds like a silly questions, but I need to watch the Cleveland Browns on Sundays. I currently have season tickets in Cleveland 9 rows from the field and this is my pride and joy! The only reason that we didn't consider moving to the VI's earlier is because I was unwilling to give up my tickets. I am a DIE HARD and if I give them up, I would hope to be able to at least watch them on tv

These are the first set of questions I have. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to email me as well.

Thanks!!

As silly as it sounds, the football part is a major deal for me as well. Check out the post I wrote entitled, "mainland sports." It might give you a good idea. And one more thing, GO PACK GO!

I really think you're a candidate for a PMV. One day here isn't enough time to make a big decision which involves selling everything back home on a move which may or may not pan out for you.

It's highly unlikely that you'll find a "career" type job without being here and doing some extensive interviewing in person. Playng Devil's Advocate, the bottom line is that the majority of "career" employers are very reluctant to hire newcomers as they're very well aware of the high attrition rate.

You should seriously consider keeping everything status quo at home and coming down here for at least a month or two to check out all your options and see if island living is really meant for you and you for it. Good luck!

Hello,

Welcome to the Board!

The best island to move to is a matter of opinion for the most part. St. John is the most expensive but not everyone that lives there is rich, although it certainly helps should you want to buy a home or land :). Water Island is for those that want a true 'my own island' feel with its benefits and inconveniences (like having the island be almost entirely residential so everything including getting gas for cars requires a trip to St. Thomas). St. Thomas and St. Croix are similar but they both have their own personalities; St. Croix being considered more laid back while St. Thomas having a little hustle-bustle going on.

Time frame... there are some on the board that say hi I am moving in a couple months and there are others that are on here planning for their move 10 years from now. So its relative. It seems that those with homes, cars that have posted have taken at the very least several months to do the sorting through items, packing, what goes to friends/family, what gets put in storage, what to sell... yard sale, shipping process.

Finding a job being easy... that is mostly in reference to service jobs in restaurants, shops and hotels during high season and not to any job. If you have hotel experience you could try contacting resorts/hotels for management openings; they might be open to receiving resumes by fax but would likely want you to come down for an interview. As mentioned businesses are wary of applicants from away... will they actually move, will they stay... stay for how long... Your husband could try and work with electricians already in business and aim for opening his own small business. Might try contractors. If he has handy-man skills perhaps resort maintenance teams/departments. The yellow pages are at www.viphonebook.com you can look up businesses that way.

No Direct TV but there is Dish Network.

You might order the Settlers Handbook to help with your research and plans. Read threads on this board and ask questions you come up with here.

Good Luck.
