I am a new grad registered nurse. I live in Southern California and have not been able to locate a job. My husband and I have set a goal to move to the island within 2 years or sooner. It is dependant on me working. If anyone can give advice on a new grad getting a job, at the hospital on the island, it would be greatly appreciated. I really just want to begin helping people and live a slow paced life.

Thanks, Crissy

Crissy: Congrats on graduating! First, have you visited St Thomas? Second, you can check http://www.rlshospital.org/ for information on Schneider Regional Medical Center. They used to pay a referral fee, so if you get a job there, we can split it, okay?? 😉

Thank you. Yes I have visited St Thomas a few times already, and I am planning a return visit in a few months. I will check the site right now, and if it turnes into a job now, I would be happy to split the referral fee with you. 😉

You will be offered a job within 60 seconds of walking into Human Servicess at either hospital on STT or STX.
They are desperate for nurses.
The moving money they give you might be negotiable.
But be advised, the working conditions/culture here is quite different than stateside hospitals.

Neil: Human Services doesn't run the hospitals. They are semi-autonomous government entities run by a board and CEO.

Crissy: He is right, the conditions here ARE different, but we need you! 🙂

East Ender, does this mean I should not go through the HR first? I was going to send my resume and cover letter and also the app for the hospital via the Internet, but I am considering flying out for a week now and seeing them in person and making the move sooner rather than later. My husband will of course remain home to handle things here for sometime, but I am ready and willing to make the change and am very excited to start a new life.

Human Resources, yes. Actually, there is a nursing recruiter. Not Human Services, which is a different government office. If you can come out and visit in person, you are way ahead of the game.

Sorry about that... I meant Human Resources of course, ...at the hospital. *-)
I don't work at the horsespittle, I'm only married to someone who does.

While mailing a resume isn't a bad idea, making a phonecall to arrange an appt is an even better idea.
Sometimes the wheels down here don't turn like they should when there's just paper involved.

Thanks Neil, I got the gist of what you were saying before. Thanks for the ideas, and after talking with my hubby, I have decided to book a flight for October giving me time to get things in order at home in case I accept the job. Besides, I don't want to go through my first hurricane season alone. 🙂
