Hey all,

I posted this message a little earlier, but felt my subject line was lame..so I'm reposting.....

I have recently accepted a job on STX and my girlfriend Jessica and I will be relocating there in about a month. She is still job hunting and is a certfied teacher here in Vermont, where we live now, and would love any tips on tracking down teaching jobs there. She has contacted a bunch of schools and made some progress, but any inside knowledge would be appreciated. She just finished her student teaching and had very good marks in school, but does not yet have a Masters degree. We would also love to get a sense of the rental market right now. Will we find options easily? We could slide into a shorter-term rental and then search for a longer-term place, but would rather just make a single move. I will be coming ahead of her by about a week, and my new employer will put us up for a week, but after that we'll be on our own.
We have a dog, but my family here in VT can look after him for as long as needed (and indefinitely in the worst case scenario), but we'd like to find some place where he would be happy and the landlord too.
Any other hints or tips on STX and making the move are welcome as well. This board has already given us a good sense of the islands and the people....

Thanks,
Patrick

Hi there,

Visit the DOE site www.teachislands.vi for openings in the public schools, fill out and submit the application but be prepared to wait a long time for any response. I applied for a position in January and am still waiting to hear about my final posting, although I do have a contract. Maybe this is atypical? There are many openings on STX posted, you just have to be a "squeaky wheel" and constantly call to follow up on your application (I called daily for two weeks!). I was offered a job at the Antilles school teaching Kindergarten but I turned it down---I prefer to work with older students. During my Antilles interview, I told the headmaster that I applied for a position with the DOE and she said she applied for a position 20 years ago and is still waiting to hear back! Good luck with the job hunt---keep us posted.

Suzanne

Thanks Suzanne-- (this is Jessica, Patrick's girlfriend)
I have the public school application, but have recently been hesitating to fill it out, because I was told by another STX educator that a new public school teacher must wait 4-6 months after being hired to get their first paycheck. Have you heard anything about this? I certainly wouldn't be able to swing it if that's the case. It makes me want to lean in the private school direction. I am also thinking that I may just substitute teach for a bit to get a feel for both the public and private schools, and then see if any openings arise? What do you think? As August nears I'm getting more nervous about my job prospects....
thanks again--Jessica

Hey Pat and Jessica,
I'm just curious where you're from in Vermont. I live in Stamford Connecticut right now, but I'm originally from Northfield VT, and I lived in Burlington VT for the past 6 years, as I attended and graduated from U.V.M..
I'm moving to STX in August, so it looks like we're in pretty similar situations - we might have to buddy up.

Best of luck with everything,
Noel

Hey Noel,
We both went to UVM as well. I'm from Calais and went to U-32, while Jessica is from upstate N.Y. We lived in Burlington for about six years as well, until we moved down here this year to be closer to the Times Argus, where I have been writing. We are excited to hear another Vermonter will be around STX. We'll send you our phone number as soon as we get one...

Hello Jessica,

Fill out applications for both Dept. Of Education and private schools. This keeps your options open. Call the DOE and ask them directly about the pay situation; they have a web site with the contact information. (if you visit the education section on this web site you will find list of schools, and in the employment section there are links to DOE)
