Hi. I am a RN and thinking about going to the islands for a nursing job. I am just wondering how is it to work in the er and Med-surg unit at the USVI hospitals and whcih one is better? Also how is the pay. If I go I might go thru a travel company so I just wanted honest opinions especially if there are any nurses on this forum. Also how are people not from the island treated by other nurses employed at theses hospitals?thanks

I have emailed your post to a nurse at the St. Thomas hospital for her feedback. I will post it if she replies.

Good, I'm curious about this as well.

My wife is an RN and is curious about the pay, etc. We are thinking that a travel nursing agency might be the way to go though; the pay is probably much better that way, although it wouldn't be permanent.

The RLS Hospital has a web site: rlshospital.org. They list job openings there, but I am not sure how up to date they are. You might search around a bit and see. The Juan Luis Hospital also has a web site, but I could not find the address on Google! Re: your question about travelers...there is an undercurrent of distrust, and I believe rightfully so. If you want to come for 3 months to see how you like it, fine. But they will not re-up your contract ad infinitum (I think it is 6 months max for needed spots). If you take a staff position, you will be seen as someone who wants to be part of the community.

Hello Ann and Chris,

Here is what the woman who is a nurse at the St. Thomas Hospital had to say:

"I would recommend that the person come as a traveller and then
could decide if she wants to stay-I feel that both areas are good places to
work and my experience with statesiders working with the local nurses has
been cooperative-I also know that how you treat others tends to be the way
you are treated-Hope that helps"
