moving to VI question

*Hi:

I am planning on moving to either St. Thomas or St. Croix for a short term period (possibly 3 months) over the summer with my husband (a scuba diver instructor). I have been reading your web site and was hoping you could help me with the following:

1. How could I get a copy of the VI "Trading Post" now, while still on the mainland? I was told that it lists many apartments for rent and cars for sale. I looked on the Daily News website but there were not a lot of classified ads. I was told that there was some kind of "trading post" that gives many options regarding apt. rentals and cars for sale. Do you know someone I could call to get a copy mailed to me - or - is there a website?

2. If I bring my dog (English Bulldog) - he must stay in an air conditioned apt. Do most of the rental apartments have A/C? Are there any other factors I should consider if I bring my dog? Are there any special quarrantines or shots he needs (he is up to date with records of his US shots)? Any licenses he must get?

3. For a short term living situation - will it be easy to find a job? I have lived in New York City for the last 5 years and worked in a professional job (Buyer for Calvin Klein Jeanswear) but would consider any job (I can and have waitressed or I can be and have been an office assistant) just to have the opportunity to live in the VI! Do you have any advice for me?

I appreciate your help. Please reply ASAP as I am running low on time and need to get things in order for my move. If there is a phone number I could call you on and you would rather me call to discuss, I would be happy to do so. An email will work fine as well (anything will work 🙂

Thanks and have a great day.

Sincerely,
Anna

Hi Anna,
I moved here last year with my dog. As far as quarantine--don't worry. For purposes of entering the territory, he just needs to have a recent rabies vaccination (I think w/in last 30 days) and proof of such from your vet.
As far as housing---someone else might have a different opinion---but I would venture to say that it is going to be difficult for you to find an air-co'd apt that accepts dogs. As it is, dog-friendly housing is difficult to come by. Of all the dog-owner-renters that I know, NONE have air-co. That's not to say that you can't puit in your own once you find an apt., but most of the air-co'd housing is in condo complexes. And most of them have no-pet or no-dog policies. I would try first finding dog-friendly housing, then either trying to convince them to put in an air-co (which will be hard since you'll only be there for 3 mos.) or investing in it your self and just chalking it up to a good well-air-co'd summer vacation.
May I ask--why does the Bully need to be in air-co? Special med. reasons or are you just worried about the heat? We moved here in July and I thought our dog and cats were going to DIE---it was so hot. The ceiling fans were on all the time and we bought extra floor ones. We also took advantage of the dog-friendly beaches. If it's just the heat, you might be able to keep him comfortable w/o air-co. Just a sugg.
GOOD LUCK!

BTW--the paper is called, the "Island Trader." Unfortunately, it is not online and when I tried to contact them for a subscrip. I never received a response. If your hubby has a job alreday lined up maybe he can trouble his future colleagues to fax the relevant pages to him?

Thanks for all that info! I appreciate it. Re: A/C for Arthur (bulldog) - I've never had a problem with him and heat but I've always had A/C. When I bought him I was told, and all the research I've done says, to keep English Bulldogs out of the heat for long periods of time - that they can die from heat exhaustion and they can have breathing probelms in the heat since they have very narrow breathing passages. I guess i would have to speak to my vet about it. Thanks again - and I'll have to look into the Island Trader.

My Father had three Bulldogs in my recollection. Never any A/C, and they lived outside! I am sure he will adjust.
