Hello,

In reviewing the UVI application, the St. Croix campus does not have a BS program for nursing, only the St. Thomas campus. There is a Nursing Education Associates degree offered on the STX campus.

What degree are you seeking?

I am not familiar with St. Croix' Nursing Edu. Associates degree. I am familiar with the St. Thomas campus Nursing program and I have a friend that is in it now. I have heard favorable comments about the instructors, classes and program.

For a general idea of salary you can use the Wage data from the Bureau of Labor listed at:

https://www.vimovingcenter.com/employment/wages.php

You should be able to find work in the local hospitals, clinics or private offices in the USVI.

Islander,
Thanks for the information. I am interested in St. Croix, and the Associate's Degree in Nursing. I just wanted a general idea on employment and wages because I have friend who is an rn and when she moved to WY she had to get a second job because the wages are very low for nurses there (less than 18/hr). I just wanted to prepare myself if I would need to get a 2nd job.
Thanks,
Mary

Hello md1-
I’m a student in the nursing program on stx and I absolutely love it. The instructors are great; it’s a small program so you get a lot of individual attention. I don’t know exactly what the resident nurses make here but I know it’s not what you could make in the states. If you have any other questions let me know I’d be happy to talk with you about our program.

Hi Lauren,
I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the nursing program. What year are you? Are you from Stx? Do you know how many students are accepted into the program each year?
Thanks,
Mary

I am in the first year, I’ll be finished with the program next spring. I’m not from stx, I’m from Portland, Oregon. As long as you meet the program criteria you are accepted, there is no waiting list and as of right now they aren’t accepting a specific number. If you haven’t already I encourage you to contact the Nursing Chair Joan Marsh, you can find her contact information on the UVI stx nursing website. Good luck Mary, let me know if I can help answer any other questions, I know how exciting and nerve racking it can be finding a nursing school and moving to an island.

Hi Lauren,

I'm an aspiring nursing student up here in chilly Massachusetts, However, I have been placed on a HUGE waiting list (all the nursing schools are currently on one!) so I'm looking into other options.

I was wondering what you did for housing, work, etc. Also, how are the facilities you do your clinical work in. Did you have to take an entrance test to get into the program?

Thanks!
Jackie

Hi Jackie,
There are no entrance tests to get in and no waiting lists, as long as you have the prerequisites and minimum GPA (2.0) you can get in. I think that UVI is a great alternative if you can’t get in to a local school, that’s why I’m here. I think that this program is probably better than the bigger state schools in the states because of the one on one attention you get. The instructors get to know you, and are always willing to help or answer a question. The clinical facility is like a rural hospital, they have everything you’ll need to learn and you’ll get all the experience you need to start your career.

As for housing and work, I found a cottage to rent with my fiancé. It’s 2 bedrooms, fenced yard safe neighborhood, about 10 min form UVI and I pay $750 a month. I work part-time as a waitress; if you have any experience waiting tables you should be able to get a job no in the service industry. I have live mainly off student loans though. If you have anymore questions let me know my email is laurenolivia@yahoo.com.
