My personal opinion is that staying at a hotel just subliminally keeps you from seeing this island thru the eyes of a resident. You tend to get a false image of island life. If you can find a room to rent from someone that would be best.

Too many people come down to do a PMV and find that it wasn't what they thought after they get here. Go figure. Living at a hotel, eating out every night, hanging on the boardwalk every evening. That isn't what living here is. Not for most.

Again, this is just my opinion.

the hotel or room would just be for a roof over my head, i love to explore. not looking for a fancy place, just don't want to pick a bad place. will be looking at homes during the visit too.

I would suggest Cottages by the Sea. Not expensive and each room has a full kitchen so you can shop and cook your own meals. It's on the west end so you'll be exposed to the "real" STX. Paul and his staff at Cottages are the greatest. They'll help you get acclimated to island life.

Danieljude also has a PMV room for rent that is inexpensive and very close to C'sted....walking distance, actually - you might try PMing him through this board....I sent him a note to tell him you were looking, he may have some ideas for you.

or check out www.villamargarita.com as another alternative. The owner/hosts are great about answering lots of questions for people interested in moving to the island.

I would second Cottages by the Sea. Great beach, great staff.. and a little kitchen in the room so you can actually have meals at home and not have to eat out every night.
