this is so horrifying. peter was a good friend of the family, i went to school with his kids. he came to thanksgiving at the beach every year with his fiance tanya. he will be missed dearly.

i am in disbelief right now. i see police stops for every 6th car, valid sticker or not. in the avis this morning, mugshots of criminals on house arrest. there needs to be more police patroling, more police stations, less random stops for registration and more rounding up of criminals, actually prosecuting them and keeping them in jail. if we don't have room here, i'm sure other states do. we need to get the island back from these scumbags and stop letting them run wild.

This makes me very very sad. I didn't know Peter but have heard great things (and some not great things) about the restaurant. I want to move to Stx full time but this incident, along with many others, makes me very wary.

i think it has gotten so bad that our police here are not sure where to start. and its hard to start when they have friends or family members commiting these crimes. thats why i have always felt that we need to hire off island cops. they have no connection to the island.
we can blame the gun carrying kids but they get the guns somewhere. and i think our police look the other way in alot of circumstances.

it is only going to get worse i'm afraid. its bad when you can not go out to a nice restaurant and not feel fear. this could happen again to anyone, anytime and any where.

In most states the citizens would protest the police departments. what do we do?????? nothing!!!!!
I agree with nforbes. our police are so worried about whether you are driving with valid documents, they could be out fighting crimes or patrolling neighborhoods.

Story I heard is that 2 guys came in, yelled "this is a robbery" but no one heard them so they fired a warning shot. Peter jumped up and they shot him, then immediately took off. IOW a botched robbery. I wasn't there, this is just through the grapevine.

Terrible, terrible news.

Well since you asked yes everyone w/o felony convictions should be armed. That s@#t declines really fast where concealed carry laws are enacted. The stats are beyond doubt. Every disarmed society is held prisoner by the government and the thugs.
Ask the Aussies.

Peter Des Jardins Gunned Down in St. Croix Restaurant
By Source Staff
August 5, 2009 — Well-known St. Croix musician, entertainment writer and boat captain Peter Des Jardins was shot and killed Tuesday night.
At about 11:40 p.m. Tuesday, two masked men appeared at the door of a restaurant in Estate St. Peter’s, witnesses told the police. One of them fired two shots, striking Desjardin, and then both fled the scene in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle.
When police responded to the 911 call, witnesses told them Des Jardins was injured. Emergency Medical Technicians examined him and could not find any vital signs, according to the initial police report.
The first suspect was described as short, medium built, with a medium to dark complexion, wearing dark clothing with a white mask or T-shirt covering his head. The second suspect was described as a tall, slim built, with a light complexion, wearing dark clothing, and a white mask or T-shirt covering his head.
Anyone who has information that might be related to this crime can call the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340-712-6077 or 340-712-6037 or the independent private tip hotline Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.

Thats 3 homicides in the last week, i sure hope the feds/atf come back soon and put these guys in jail, and maybe, just maybe the VIPD which is now going through their own scanals can do something to aprehed these guys.

This is so scary. I feel so sorry for the family and our community.

We need to stand up as one and demand that this needs to stop!

i just had a thought ( oh no!) but what if the stateside news got ahold of this. If CNN or FOX reported on this shooting and it threatened our tourism do you think THAT THEN we the people would stand up. and possibly if we had stateside coverage on why this is happening, the pressure would be put on our governor and police to clean this up. Anyone of us could be next. (scary thought)

Of course you hear of this happening in the states but this is to much for the size of our community. and its only going to get worse.

Somethink that if we educate the kids and volunteer in clubs to help the young this will help. but what about the older ones already out there. There has to be a mass demonstration like the 60's. (tell how old i am) but people were heard.

the pickled greek is located directly across from Pearl B. Larsen School. It wasn't open at the time, as summer break is still in session.

If a crime is within 100 feet of a public school, feds are brought in

I just wanted to say how sad we are that this happened. We're not shocked, but it's just so sad to know that this may be another unsolved murder on St Croix. I agree with Dixie Chick in that we need to have outsiders (feds/police, etc) process the crimes that go on here. To many of the law enforcement officers are related to the ones that are committing the crimes (friends, family, etc). For an island so small as STX to have as many crimes unsolved is really just not acceptable. I mean really, we are the same size as Manhattan (NYC) with only approx only 60,000 pop. and NYC has over 1 million pop. It's a joke.

Once again we are very sad for Peter's family and for Peter the owner of the Pickled Greek. Our condolences go out to everyone involved, including all us residents of STX.
