Wow...I am very happy I found this website, it has a lot of information. Anyway, I am becoming a pilot and eventually would like to work for a major. Is there any way to work for a major (american, us air, continental...) while living in St. Thomas? Do you know of any people who do this?
Also, all pilots who eventually work with a major airline must start out in a smaller airline for a few years. Are there any small airlines(commuter airliners) with a decent reputation and a good safety record that would let a pilot live in St. Thomas? Is
My dream has always been to live on a tropical island, and after visting St. Thomas a few years ago I thought this was the one. Am I too far fetched thinking I can be a pilot for a major airline who lives on St. Thomas? will it be hard to make it work? Thanks for the answers in advance

Also, I heard from a flight instructor about Seaborne Airliners, and I would thing about flying for them if I get accepted, the only problem is most likely the salary comparison of Seaborne with a Major. Does anyone know the average pilot salary for Seaborne?

Pilot,
I come from a family of three generations of Air Force Pilots so I have a lot of family and friends who work for the major airlines. There are no major crews stationed out of St. Thomas. The pilots back in the states bid each month on different routes and depending on seniority are assigned those routes. So even flying in and out of St. Thomas consistently may be hard to do depending on the airline. The smaller carriers like Seaborne and Carribean are your best bet. As far as pay I would imagine that pilots make a comparible salary to a puddle jump pilot back in the states. Seaborne seems to advertise for pilots the most, so you might want to talk to them. Good Luck.

My Husband works for Seaborne and the pay is good. The benefits are good and the people are awesome to work for.

Seaborne sounds very good to start out with, since I most likely wont work for a major while living in St. Thomas I would work for them if I can get by nicely on that salary. I would have to take seaplane lessons but thats another story. I do have a few questions about St. Thomas though....

I know this is repetitive but I was looking to dailynews.vi and it says talks about how the East End(the safest end as said by many posters) has had 5 robberies this week. Is this rare? Also, when I move down there, what precautions should I take to guard against robberies?

If I am a bit paranoid about crime(which I am ever since my house was robbed twice as a child) is this the wrong place for me to move? This is an honest question as isnt meant to offend anybody.

Hello Pilot,

Definately look into Seaborne. Other small airlines that work in the USVI are Liat and Cape Air. Look in the yellow pages for others www.viphonebook.com

There is a search feature at the top of this board... search for crime. There are many threads for you to read through on this topic.

Pilot,
In order to work for Seaborne, you'll need to have your multi-engine, seaplane, ATP ratings. Multi-engine seaplane is a little unusual. We also have Cape Air which flies Cessna 402's and Carribean Sun (I don't know what they fly). You will need your ATP ticket to fly for any of them. Hang in there and keep the dream It's tough but a lot of people do it.
