Place to Buy Mase?

Good day, All.

There are times when I need to walk in areas of the island that are considered less safe and want to be protected. Some bad things have happened lately to two of my friends and I just don't want to be in that situation. Before everyone pipes in that I should just avoid those areas, I want it known that I am very careful and am not soliciting advice on that at all.

I want to purchase some mase. Does anyone know a reliable place to buy it?

Thanks!

I'm not sure but it seems I heard it's illegal.

Really? That may be. I never even thought of that.

I might be wrong on that. You could ask a policeman but that doesn't mean you'll get the right answer. It just seems I remember hearing it somewhere. I've never seen it sold anywhere.

I believe if you e-mail The Gunsmithy (AKA Clayton Perry - he's one only 2 gun dealers on island) at clayton@viperry.com and ask him, he may have mace already on hand for sale...or he may be able to offer you an alternative, such as a taser, that is legal. I know for a fact that he has those in stock. Good luck!

P.S. I e-mailed him and asked him to look at this post, so he may try contacting you...

Are you on STT? Check with Ed or Sandra at Blade and Key in Red Hook. I think they have pepper spray.

Warning! I have seen deternined muggers continue an attack after "pepper spray." While it might deter some, it is not entirely trustworthy. If you miss, you are in trouble. Tasers sound better. Just a thot

Many officers have to take a "class" where they are sprayed and have to perform after that before they are allowed to carry pepper spray. It will not deter a professional or determined criminal. You need to know which way the wind is blowing or you will spray yourself and never ever spray it in an enclosed area.

Is mace different from pepper spray?

Taser would be much better, but the spray would be better than nothing

Taser can also kill someone...as could pepper spray if there is an allergy....forget taser. Do you really want to assume that responsibility? And what are you going to do, walk around carrying it like a gun and possibly take your own life in your hands? Anything you can use can be used against you - and pepper spray and mace are only going to piss off a doper or someone determined....but you get mace or pepper spray on you and you are going to be one miserable camper. Mace is teargas in an aerosol form.

I have been sprayed with pepper spray on accident. It did not incapacitate me only made me angry. I do however carry pepper spray because if you are in fear of your life it may help you to get away. If you use it make sure that it will not blow back into your own face and run like heck after you use it. Like Becky said it someone is allergic it could kill them. There were two fatalities in my home city in one week after police officers sprayed pepper spray to subdue a criminal. I also agree with Becky that any weapon you have can be used against you very easily if you are scared or hesitant in any way. I would suggest taking a self defense class.

I think Dugtamji is trying to agree with Becky...I would also think that any of those devices in the hands of an untrained amateur could end the user in a world of hurt. You seem quite determined to put yourself in jeopardy...do you have to walk? Could you not drive?

Note: if you do acquire mace or pepper spray, you have to put it in checked luggage. Cape Air confiscated mine.

Here's my suggestion for self defense. It sounds like mace, but it is masa which some know is used to make tamales. Once hardened into a ball and thrown at the head, it will cause a massive concussion.

Cheaper and safer than mace in an amateur's hand

So that's it then, dry tamala paste and a strong right arm!!!! I still think it would all be a lot safer if said ball of goo was hurled from a speeding car

In a thread from months ago, somebody sagely suggested you practice using the mace. When you're in panic mode, it's hard to think and act correctly.

And to everybody except --->JeN<---: Better yet, avoid the unsafe area, or go with a group.

I carry a flare gun in the car. Scares the heck out of the bad guys and are easily obtainable at any marine store.
