Okay,

I'm in the process of trying to find airfare to the islands . . . I'm really doing this! Woohoo!!! (I will not throw up. I will not throw up. I will not throw up. . . )

If anyone notices a cat friendly place that a poor, starving student can afford in Cruz Bay, let me know! I'm playing with dates to try and get the best airfare, but am looking at arriving at the end of October.

Excitedly (and nauseatedly) yours,

Jen Cobb

Be prepared to pay maybe around $1,000 for a studio. Lucky if you find one that accept cats! They are best to find word of mouth, but you got to be there.

I'm sorry if I gave the impression this was a "wing and a prayer" venture. I assure you it is not. I have read just about every page of this website and have been planning this move for about three months. That's the actual planning period, not the amount of time I've thought about this. I've debated the move for over three years.

As I said in a previous post, I'm a lawyer working on a Ph.D in Coastal Resource Management. I do have funding for the year, but will want a part-time job to offset the costs of living in the USVI. I've just wrapped up a contract position for the National Park Service in DC, and in an ideal world, would be able to find a part time position at the VI Park (which will likely be impossible given the current NPS budget) or at least volunteer a few hours a week to start "networking."

Actually, deciding between St. John and St. Croix was difficult. STX has the Coastal Management program for the university, but STJ has the National Park. STX is cheaper, but I have some NPS experience.

Sad though it is, I'm a spinster with two cats. Rest assured, the cats' needs come before mine. I'd starve to make sure they are well cared for. My family is convinced I'm actually ASPIRING to be the crazy cat lady. =)

One thing I've learned on these boards is that everything in the island is "who you know" or "word of mouth." Hence my post. I was just asking those of you on the island to keep your eyes (or ears) peeled for information you can pass along.
