This plant sprouted up beside our walk way. Anybody know what it is? Is it poisonous?

"Wiffleball" or "Stinkhorn"

Scientific name Clathrus Crispus"

It's a type of fungus common to the Virgin Islands. It may give off a bad odor which it uses to attract flies by which means it reproduces.

Nice find!

Thank you for answering our question.

We are not particularly fond of the volunteer plant. How do you kill it? Would you like it for your garden?

Thanks again

I have had these pop up in my yard every so often. They usually just shrivel up within a day or two. I never noticed a smell and they have not reappeared in the same spot twice.
