Hi Everyone,

I will be making a pmv with my mother at the end of may/beginning of june. Can anybody give me a good base for what to look for when we arrive. I will actually be moving with my husband but he is overseas now. We have vacationed on STJ twice already and we did go to connections, talk with locals and inquired about employment at a few places. We have checked out food prices and things that we would need on a daily basis. What are some other things I can do that will give us an extra boost for when we actually get here. We are waiting for the house to sell and my husband to finish his tour in Iraq. Also I have thoroughly researched moving costs etc and have planned put aside a good chunk of cash for 6 months of start up expenses. All suggestions appreciated and yes I know STJ is the most expensive island!

I am not fond of the acronym PMV, as it presupposes you are going to move. I would suggest a look-see visit, long enough for you to see what living in the Virgin Islands is like. That means looking at grocery stores, banks, laundries, shopping malls, hardware stores, all the places you visit at home on a regular basis. If you will be looking for work, go around and get phone numbers or e-mail addresses of anyone remotely connected to your line of work. Don't go to the beach and drink foo-foo drinks. Ask yourself questions like: Where is the library? How do I deal with my trash? If I live in this place, how do I get water? Where are the doctors we might need? Am I going to be able to find x ingredient for my world famous recipe? What am I going to do on Saturday night? 😉

Hello Sarah,

You could look at apartment availabilities, get an idea of what is available, price range, what you get for your money, areas of the island etc. Check out more employment options. Stop in at the post office, the bank. Are there any associations you and your husband might want to get involved with, hobbies, sports - perhaps check those out, see if there are any meetings or events going on that you could stop in on. You could spend a day over on St. Thomas and check out the shopping and service options there. If there are particular food and everyday items you like, see if you can find them... note the ones you don't find so your Mom can include them when she sends you care packages ;).

For a taste of Carnival events, the Pan-o-Rama is on Sat June 2nd, 2007 4:00pm at Franklin Powell Park. Its a great chance to listen to local steel pan groups.

Hope this helps some.
