From information on the board, a car is virtually a requirement on any of the Islands. Does everyone just rent a car for their PMV's? If so, are there any inexpensive rentals to be had?

Jenn:

We always rent a car, even on our "PMV".......we own, but don't live there full time.

The best we've seen for a "short term" rental is at Hertz with a AAA discount. A mid size runs us about $230. per week (including taxes & fees). Plus Hertz is located at the airport.

Other companies to call and compare weekly rates include Centerline Car Rentals, Judi of Croix, Thrifty, and Midwest Auto Rental. These are some of the smaller companies and they don't spend $$ on offices at the airport, but most will deliver a car to you there when you arrive. Sometimes they are quite a bit cheaper than the big boys like Hertz & Avis. Other times, they still have cars available when the airport's on-site agencies are out.

from what i've read in all the various books and research materials i have, i personally (and tell me if this is not suggested) was not going to rent a vehicle while there on a pmv, the various things i've read say that if you're not in a hurry or whatever you can catch the buses and go just about anywhere (STT and STX). 'Course here i drive everywhere, but in visits to my sister in Savannah, GA, most of our time spent there (esp in historic district) was spent walking or catching the safari-type tourist buses and trolleys- it's a true walking city. Wouldnt want to walk everywhere on STT or STX, of course, but dont mind it for short distances and would think the buses (or on occasion a taxi) would suffice. comments?

Don't know about STT, but on STX the busses DO NOT run everywhere. I think it would be very difficult to do the traveling necessary for a PMV without a car.

with my potential visit looking like the month of May, arent you kind of going into (or already in) off season and should have a fair availability of rental vehicles? everything i've read DOES mention that if you're going (vacationing or otherwise) in high season it's advisable to book rental cars months in advance. thanks

jenn: On STT you could try Bowsky Auto Sales and Car Rentals at 340- 779-2600. I haven't used them personally but have had friends and customers who've done well with them and I understand their prices are considerably lower than the "name-brand" rental companies.

Linda J is absolutely correct about the unreliability of public transport and the same is indeed true for STT as well as STX. Being without transportation here gets very old very fast and trying to get around on a PMV without one would, in my opinion, severely limit you. Cheers!
