Poll for Residents: Which Bank Do You Prefer?

Good Day, All...

Have done all of the online research I can on banks in St. Croix, and think I've decided which one should work for us. But before I commit myself to anything, I thought I'd take a poll of my very helpful islander friends from this board and ask which bank you prefer and why you like it.

I've heard a few tales on this board of unfriendly clerks and long waits in banks. So I have to ask -- are ATMs and/or direct deposit not widely available in the VI? Thanks to electronics, wire and online transfers, and direct deposit, I haven't seen a bank teller or even been inside a bank in the last seven years!

As always, all insights -- positive or negative --are greatly appreciated. Bonus points are awarded for funny banking stories as I need a laugh this week.

Thanks!

I would not recommend VICB.

We originally selected them because they offered ATM cards. After repeated trys they still can't make it work reliably.

Hell has no fury like a wife when she comes from K-Mart and her ATM/Debit card has been declined.

As soon as we find a better bank we are moving our money. We are considering Bank of St Croix.

HipCrip,

We use Banco Popular. Our landlord (who worked for CitiBank when they were here) told us that does internet banking. Since we do a lot of that, I went with them. I don't know if the information he gave me was accurate, but we have been quite happy with them once we got a couple of glitches taken care of when we first opened the account. We have their Popular Plus account which pays pretty fair interest on the money in your checking account and there are no service charges if you keep a minimum balance of $2500.

Hope that helps.

RIc, that does help a lot - thank you! Banco Popular is the one we've been leaning towards specifically for their online banking services. I am addicted to e-paying my bills and really don't want to go back to having to mail out any more checks than I have to.

Thanks for the advice on the VICB experience, too, Jim. It doesn't sound at all pleasant -- I do hope the Bank of St. Croix works out better for you. Please do let me know, okay?

I use First Bank here on STT. It seems fine.

However (and there is always a however, right Reggie?) I do 100% of my banking electronically, on line and at ATMs, so I really don't know about lines, surley tellers etc. I have only been inside the bank once, and that was to establish the account (I also have actually NEVER been to the credit union in Illinois where I have my major accounts and that has been 15 years).

What I am trying to get at is that if you do things the "modern way" First Banks' systems seem to be quite good to me.

Thanks,. stt -- I'm a modern woman all the way and try to do all my errands and shopping over the Internet,so I only have to leave my house to do fun stuff. It's good to know that I won't have to give up all my virtual errand-running once we move.
