Hello all! Let me begin by saying that the amount of time some of you put into giving us dreamchasers necessary info is priceless and I really appreciate it. Although I thought I was one af very few with the wonderful idea to move to the islands, I now realize that people are moving down there nearly every week. Or, so it seems! I must be honest. I have mixed feelings about so many interested in island living. I am glad because I'm not alone is believing that an island is where I belong. On the other hand, I am a little worried because I would rather not share the island with a million other people. I have that here in my big city and I want fewer people!!! That said, on to the reason for my post. I feel as if I have been the ultimate voyeur long enough. I have lapped up the older threads and watched daily for new posts as it made me feel like I was already there and some sort of social support system in place. I told my husband I wanted to slow down, stop to smell the flowers and live my life in the tradewinds of an island. The next day, he brought home an ad in a magazine for a job in St. Croix. The ad was as if it had been written specifically for him. We sent an inquiry along with a resume and lo and behold, we are on our way Friday, August 20th, to meet the company officials and negotiate terms of employment. Things have really fallen into place so well that I am waiting for the bomb to drop. On with my questions...I have read about short-term rental on STT but not STX except for the place under the bar that HipCrip stayed in. My husband will be down around the first of October and we will not be joining him until Mid-December and wondered what y'all would suggest as the least complicated accommodations to try and secure. While we are down there this weekend, we would like to scope out a few places and get an idea of what we are facing. When the rest of us arrive in December, we will be looking for long-term rental (6 months to a year) so that we can determine where on the island we want to live. I too do not want to live in a gated community with all the "whites like me" and would rather become part of the island and its people. I am a sociologist in the making and will be doing research in the Spring on the cultural differences between the Caribbean and the South and a gated community is not where I want to start. I am so excited and would love some feedback as to where to look around this weekend. I can't wait to meet some of you in person. I have enjoyed reading your excerpts and look forward to more as the days pass.

According to the CIA, population growth in the USVI isn't currently a problem. (Maybe when you are born there, it's not quite as special?)

Population growth rate:
-0.05% (2004 est.)

Birth rate:
14.49 births/1,000 population (2004 est.)

Death rate:
6.1 deaths/1,000 population (2004 est.)

Net migration rate:
-8.94 migrant(s)/1,000 population (2004 est.)

The farther east you go on St. Croix, the more you find white mainland transplants. Other than that, the island, as far as I know, is fairly mixed.

Hello Melinda,

Welcome!!

Although it may seem "millions" are looking to move to the USVI the reality is some move, some don't, some are planning for tommorrow and some are planning for 10 years from now, some move and stay, others come to look, experience and go back home and of course some move and don't like it and go back home. So a big city we are not... but somedays sitting in noon traffic along the waterfront on St. Thomas, in 90+ degree heat, while road rage sets in as taxi drivers try to cut in front of you.... you sure could forget you weren't on a freeway somewhere on the mainland... LOL... 🙂

It is wonderful to read that things came together so well for you, I hope that continues and the adventure is a wonderful experience. Do keep us posted and ask any questions you come up with!

I would suggest staying in an inn/b&b or small hotel for a few days while looking around the island for the areas that you like and for apartments. I noted you said We will not be joining him... do you have children, pets, other family/friends coming along? These factors might affect people's suggestions of good places to look at.
